Sins

matter - through Hermitage
rose-colored lenses.
We like a tidy scenario fea-
turing the best of Manifest
Destiny and Christian ideal-
ism.
We do better positioned as
the good guys, defenders of
freedom, instruments in the
hands of the Great Sovereign
to execute justice and levy
freedom from shore to shining
sea.
Or something like that.
A lot of who we are is
defined by who we have been,
thus the tendency to revise the
past and romanticize our
transgressions.
Such nostalgic reinterpreta-
tions abuse both history and
theology.
The truth remains: we are
sin-sick fallen creatures who
will justify most any action -
no matter how violent or
exploitive - to advance our
own cause.
We have no trouble justify-
ing means that accomplish our
desired end - never have,
never will.
It’s the Battle Hymn of the
Republic.
And all us sinners are part
of the problem.
And no amount of red,
white and blue can disguise
our self-centered intentions.
And we would do ourselves a
favor by confessing our trans-
gressions.
There remains great heal-
ing power in repentance.
Honesty is always the best
policy.
How that translates into the
New Globalization of the 21st
century will be worth watch-
ing.
How America advances her
interests in a century geared
for Asian domination promises
tension and conflict.
We are going to require a
new band of heroes to navi-
gate the perilous course ahead.
For the time being, we
ought to consider the parame-
ters and responsibilities asso-
ciated with a Christian
Republic, if in fact we are any
longer either.
Soul searching is a noble
exercise for freedom lovers.
I’m proud to be an
American, and I honor all
those who sacrificed to ensure
our freedom, but I can’t in
good conscience or faith dis-
miss our failures and sins. We
are who we are, and we’ll only
get better via contrition and
genuine repentance.
I wonder how the bal-
ladeers of the next century
will view our present.
More next week.
