Marlins 're-load' for '97-98 hoop season
Bv Mary Judson
South Jetty editor
Like a hunter on opening day. Port
Aransas High School Marlin Coach
John Crammer is reloading.
"In the past two years we graduated
13 seniors. That’s an average of 6.5 a
year," Crammer said
l ast May, live of the top seven
players graduated The year before,
eight graduated.
"It means a big change,” Crammer
said
The game plan changed some Iasi
year because of a lack of depth This
Marlin team is young and inexpert
enced, bui has depth
Crammer plans to work the Marlins
buck to the traditional up-tempo game
"We'll run and press, and in time,
ibis group could be the besi ever,"
(hammer said
I he majority of the IW7 98 Mai
Inis are sophomores or players who

Rockport Pulton Tournament Nov 20

"We’ll open with 4A Robstown II
we win, we ll play (Corpus Christi)
Ray. then Rockport. and in the Imals,
(Corpus Christi) Miller That'll be a
test, especially if we re not playing
with a lull deck (due to eligibility
requirements) ami we have players
playing out ol position," Crammer

" I ties II deep and tall We saw that
during the fall league Alter tfiat we

"They’re young players and they
have to leant that they’re affected by
what happens on the floor as well as
what happens in class and off the floor,"
Crammer said.
In district, San Perlua graduated
eight, so they're rebuilding
"They've been strong a long tune,
but they shouldn't be as good this
year,” Crammer said
With San Ferlila damaged by gradu-
ation, Crammer expects San Isidro to
be the biggest competition m district.
They’re "pretty good, maybe belter
than last year, and it's hard to beat
them at home."
He predicts the Marlins will win
district
"Of course, we should have wi>n
district last year," fie said
Crammer thinks (fiat by the end of
the year the Marlins will be a really
good team.
This year’s play-offs will be differ-
ent The road to the Regional Tourna-
ment involves three play-off games
instead of two bi district, area and
quarterfinals. Then, the Regional Tour-
nament will be a two game format
instead of three: one on Friday night
and another Saturday af ternoon
Crammer and some other coaches
lobbied for this change lwo years
ago, the Marlins played Friday night,
Saturday morning and Saturday af ter
noon at regional. The first two games
were intense, down to the wue con
tests, and two or three hours between
the second and third games was just
not enough time to regain the intensity
and momentum
"I think we have a chance to gel lo
regional if things fall into place I Ins
group wotks hard, they're maiming,
they're physical and they have menial
toughness," Crammer said
It goes like this. . .
Marlin Coach John Grammar shows junior post Matt Cotfen, how
to maneuver on the hardboards during a recent practice. The Pod
Aransas High School basketball teams will open the season with
scrimmages Tuesday. Nov 11 and the first official games will be
