SOUTH J ETTY
AUGUST 31, 1978
WATERING HOLE
by C.J. Plummer
Marshmellow clouds drift in
from the Gulf... a breeze hints of
fall days... aching body barely
intact, I escaped from darkroom
duties to join Terry, Lyndel, and
Wendy in a medicinal brew on the
porch of the Sports Center. Talk
rambled: tales of Island nocturnal
capers... the approaching fall...
and kiwis; (the New Zealand bird
now adorns one of the harbor
docks... art work by Wendy). A
second brew... a lazy afternoon on
the flats and a cure for the
Monday blues.
The tale began at the laundro-
mat; seven loads of wash later Jay
stumbled into the B-B for a much
needed brew. A celebration fol-
lowed: Jay, Jan, Janet and Barb
journeyed to Pelican’s Wharf for a
going-away dinner party. A feast:
steak done to perfection, Alaskan
king crab, scrumptious salad, and
numerous libations. They returned
to the B-B bringing the bartender
goodies in a doggy bag. A concert
followed; an hour of original
compositions by concert pianist
Jay. A beautiful farewell to Island
friends. Jay is headed for points
north and teaching duties at North
Texas State. Finale to the tale: an
emergency stop had to be made at
the laundromat on the way to the
bus station... an entire load of
wash had been left in the dryer.
Big Frank and Ann and clan are
down from Fort Worth to visit the
Island and family. “Fuzzy Miller”
the newest addition to the clan,
shows signs of becoming “a chip
off the old block”, judging from
the size of his feet.
Stood-up... mouth watering for
one of Sandy’s special sandwiches
at the Party House; Terry could
not be found for the appointed
lunch date with a certain photo-
grapher... hunger pangs will have
to wait until the morrow.

Lodge, and accomplice “C.C.”

George journeyed to the big city
for some R. and R. The duo
stopped at the Playboy Club and
were greeted by a well-endowed
topless waitress with these words,
“I’m sorry but long pants are
required.” George explained,
“We’re from the Island...”, but
the explanation did not cut the
mustard. It seems that long
trousers are required and tops are
optional... for females anyway.
Thank you, Roy Swann, Christ-
mas in August is great!
Rip Van Winkle? Not quite, but
Duane did slip in a few winks
while listening to the Dallas-Pitts-
burgh game in the beer garden. It
had been a strenuous day of
endulgement for the hammer-
toting Islander.
Shades of Fred and Ginger;
Miller and Ted really “cut a rug”
while dancing to the beat of the
Pocket Rockets Saturday night at
Billy’s. That dangerous libation,
Boston Tea, has succeeded in
destroying another sojourner.
Ruth, of the New Zealand trio... a
generous quantity of the potent
mix Friday night. Hours later she
finally made her way to Corpus...
when there’s a will there is often
a way! The birthday paddle at
Boxcar’s has claimed another
victim. “Save by George” took
his licks like a gentleman. B.F.
had a feast Monday night., the
ipain course of the Monday night
barbecue fare was snapper and
shrimp. B.F. joined in the early
“helping” Coon Ass Dave while
he filleted the fish in preparation
for the barbecue. Final note on
feline news: B.F.’s recent trip to
the doctor has not slowed down
her noctural wanderings.
Word of wisdom on Monday
morning blues... perhaps it was
the water... but “If a frog had
wings he would not bounce his
cold, flat, green a_ on the
ground.”
