SOUTH JETTY
NOVEMBER 9, 1978
Hobgoblins, spooks, gouls,
witches, well known characters
(world wide and “islandish”)
gathered together on the Feast of
Allhallows to partake in fiendish
shenanigans and goulish merry
making. The scene of the Hallo-
ween bash: the Party House
Number 1 and the Annual Island
Costume Party. Hiding behind my
worn Nikon, I wandered through
masses of strangely familiar but
unrecognizable faces. A special
bubbling brew (of perhaps a
hamamelidaceious nature) had
been concocted for the occasion.
Keeping the goblins and gouls
supplied with liquid refreshment
were ... a werewolf type of
character that bore a close
resemblance to Alan, a little Eva
character that may have been
Julie, and a mysterious Wizard.
Taking a sip from a cold long
neck, 1 turned and ran into the
Incredible Hulk ... in Williard
form. The antics of Allhallows at
the Party House continued through
the bewitching hour . . . best cos-
tume awards were presented . . .
and the music became more
feverish as witches and goblins
made merry. It is rumored that an
island werewolf tried to “eat” a
fence on this night of mystery. As
the evenings’ libations took hold
of a wandering photographer . . .
details fade . . . pictures may tell
the true tale.
A concert in honor of birthday
girl Carmen. Sunday afternoon
friends gathered at the B—B to
wish Carmen a joyous 28th. Many
toasts were raised to this fine
lady. Musicians Clint, Tony and
Ross Dickerson and son, Richie,
put on a concert supreme for the
birthday celebration. Music rang-
ing from folk ballads to mellow
jazz sounded forth from the corner
of the B—B.
Winter time on the island is
shuffleboard games, dominoes,
darts, and various types of
challenges. On the shuffleboard, a
game between master shuffle-
board players Barb and Yankee . .
after a spirited match . . . point
exchanged for point . . . Barb
emerged victorious. Onlookers
thoroughly enjoyed the next round
of brew . . . compliments of
Yankee. A different kind of
challenge at Boxcar’s. Corky and
Billy are still “guttin’ it out” in
their pact to refrain from brew for
two weeks. The third member of
the original pact has “fallen off
the brew wagon”. Chef Chris was
last seen trying to make up to.'
lost brew by downing his favorite
beer two at a time.
Traveling notes: Sweetest Little
Old Lady Number 1, Miller has
returned from her visit to Mississ-
ippi. Melissa and Johnny have
headed for R. and R. south of the
Border. Marry Ellen received a
note from two traveling English-
men (who have a propensity
towards frolicking in muddy
ditches); the pair are now
journeying Mexico way.

Comptroller To
Sue For Taxes
State Comptroller Bob Bullock
last week said tax liens are being
filed against some 9,000 corpora-
tions in an effort to collect at least
$500,000 in overdue franchise
taxes.
“We are moving against the
dawdlers and lollygagers who
failed to make the regular
franchise tax report and payments
that were due on June 15,”
Bullock said.
All businesses have been noti-
fied they are delinquent and that
their right to do business in Texas
has been forfeited, Bullock said.
The Comptroller’s Business Tax
Division, which administers the
tax, says the amount due the state
may be more than the estimated
half-million dollars.
All the corporations owe at
least the minimum tax, which is
$55 per year.
Some firms may be subject to
higher taxes based on a formula
which levies $4.25 per $1,000 of
the corporation’s stated capital,
surplus and undivided profits
allocated to Texas, or $4.25 per
$1,000 of the total county assess-
ed value, whichever is greater.
Liens in Nueces County total
more than 130.
Harris County leads the list of
delinquent francise taxpayers,
where 2,734 liens are being filed.
There are 1,802 liens being
filed in Dallas County and 637
liens being filed in Tarrant
County.
Liens are being placed against
485 businesses in Bexar County
and some 400 businesses in Travis
County.
The liens are filed in counties
where the Comptroller’s office has
identified a business operation or
where the corporation owns prop-
erty.
There are over 188,000 corpora-
tions doing business in Texas.
