Gositrol of Heart
Disease Seen Hopeful
One of the most amazing turnabouts
of modern times — one that effects
thousands of hoínes where heart disease
has straek — is the change in attitude
toward heart disease.
Ten years ago the prevailing attitude
toward heart disease was one of near
hopless. Today the outlook is one of
confidence. Treatment of heart suffer-
ers is now much more effective than it
was a decade ago. What is more, the
pros poet of gaining control of the ma-
jor forms of heart disease is most hope-
ful.
Dramatic indication of progress has
been happening with the two most re-
valent forms of heart disease: harden-
ing of the arteries, and high blood pres-
sure, which may be linkeď with one an-
other, and which effects a great ma-
jority of Americans.
Greatly improved treatment is avail-
able for parents with these diseases. New
and powerful drugs, as well as diets
carefully planned to check weight and
salt intake, make it possible to control
high blood pressure which in many
cases ušed to be beyond the doctor’s
reach. “Anticoagulant” drugs are now
widely ušed. to help keep down recur-
rcnces of coronary ocelusion — a type
of heart attack due to the formation of
blood1 clots in the smáli arteries of the
heart.
In purely statistical terms, these and
other aďvances in heart medicine háve
had the effect of adding years to the
lives of individual Americans. Many a
victim of heart disease is now able to
return to work and earn a living, often
with few restrictions on his time or en-
ergies.
From the point of yiew of the Ameri-
can family, heart progress has ireant
families living togetlier for many addi-
tional years, and parents surviving to
see their children grown into adulthood.
And the fight against heart disease
goes on. Research workers are vigouous-
ly traeking down clues to the underly-
ing cause of high blood pressure and
hardening of the arteries. Where do hor-
mones fit in? —the Chemicals which
the body’s glands pour into the blood-
streani to control vítal function.s. Do
mental and physical stress háve an ef-
fect on the heart and its allied organs?
Does fat in the diet play a part in heart
disease?
One of the most remarkable discover-

ies to come out of current heart re-
search is tlre fact that woinen before
menopause ar e v a síly less siisce ptible to
coronary ocelusion than men, perliaps
one-twentíeth as susceptible., This has
led researchers down another patli of in-
vestigation, to explore the role of sex
hormones in hardening of the arteries.
The expectation of life has more than
doubled since this century began. The
Jargest factor so far in this change has
been the suppression of infectious di-
seases, Such medical progress in the re-
cent past, togetlier with the intensive,
productive research now going on, justi-
fies the strong hope of gaining control
over heart disease,
