FROM THE EMTOTS DESK
There are some members who are
true fdatednalists at heart and
will always remaln so. Even if they
experlen.ee some unpleasant epl-
sodes in thelr lodge work, for in-
stance, and íeel disallusioned for a
while, they always háve the fra-
ternal spirit and love for thelr fel-
low human beíngs and our Society
to “bounce back” to use a manner
of speaklng.
In this čase we may speak of two
members — a man and his wlfe.
This writer had the good fortuně
to make thelr acqualntance In the
1950s when they became members
of Lodge No. 88, Houston.
Soon aíter that thelr true íra-
temal spirit began to show itself in
thelr interest in the lodge work
and desire to do the right thing
in all cases. The gentleman would
not mince words in lodge meet-
ings and was even told that he was
too radical by a member, however,
he always remained fraternal. He
worked at NASA and when Lodge
No. 172, Pasadena, was organized
he transíerred there beeause lt was
closer to his home. He was crlti-
cized by some of his fellow mem-
bers for dolng so, however, he and
his wlfe pitched right in and work-
ed hard for thelr new lodge. He
loaned the lodge a nice sum of
money and both worked to help
the lodge along. They háve rela-
ttves near West and every year or
two they would stop by for a few
TKEASUBE OHEST
Deep in the sanetnm ©f my heart
That secret part of sne,
I keep a chest of btimished gold
From days that ušed to fce.
There, fiHed with memories erystal
cíear
And trinkets from my yester-year;
I find a lilac-bordered spsing
Entanglei with a passing dream,
And hear a long-forgotten song ..
Of stars that slipped away at dawn
I close the chest and Mde the keys
With joy for memories such as
minutes to chat. On one such trip
he told us of an unpleasant episode
that had happened and he was
sending his dues to the Supreme
Lodge. We won’t go into detail;
however, his view was that we are
all brothers and slsters after all
and all entitled to diíferent views.
Many persons would háve been dis-
gruntled and bitter,
About 6 or 7 years ago he stopped
by and sald he would háve to retire
from NASA beeause of an age limit
and told of having some property
in the Hill Country, near Canyon
Lake in the San Antonio - New
Braunfels area and that he and his
wife would move there to retire.
The idea of placing his member-
ship in San Antonio was discussed
and he sald that he would just watt
for a fcime. For about 4 or § years,
we did not see them and in early
1976 a lodge was begun in New
Braunfels and Brother Joe Slavik,
Sr., represented the lodge at the
XXIInd Convention in June. 1976
(Lodge No. 185). We immediately
thought of this eouple and one
day when he called about some-
thing, he informed us that he had
placed his membership there,
which we were glad to hear.
In one of the SL meetings (in
October, 1976 or early 1917), some
one made the statement that it
appeared as if Lodge No. 185, New
Braunfels would háve to be dis-
banded beeause of membership
transfers out and a lack of interest
of the others.
Some members may háve guessed
by now who is the subject of these
paragraphs. The two slncere fra-
temalists we v/rite about are none
other than Brother and Sister
Gordon Hrabal! The first thing
anyone knew, his name was ap-
pearing in the insurance sales re-
ports from the SL and Dist. VII SE
reports as a sales representative
for Lodge No. 185, and doing good
work as such. Well, the rest is his-
tory; on Sunday, Nov. 27th, 1977,
the lodge was officially chartered
and: frankly, was saved from be-
ing disbanded, mostly due to
Brother HrabaFs enthusiasm and
fraternal effort.
