SUPREME LODGE
FROM THE PRESIDENTA
OFFICE
Summeťs Review And The
Corning Months
Dear Members:
We will soon be looking at the
end oí summer and at our fall ac-
tivities, so I thought this might be
a good time to review some things
of the past several months.
First of all, let me say that I am
most grateful for all the kind-
nesses extended to me during my
confinement in the hospital the
early part of July. I want to thank
you all for your personál visits, get-
well cards, telephone inquiries,
letters, flowers, etc. — all of which
were sent to me by individuals,
from lodges, from youth clubs, and
from other auxiliary organizations.
I had a stomach ulcer operatioon.
I had not previously known of my
ulcer condition because I had had
absolutely no symptoms. In retro-
spect, I guess I worked at getting
the ulcers over the past months,
perhaps years. I was released from
the hospital on the ninth day of
confinement and háve been back
at the offiee and attending to my
usual duties since that time. I
might add that one good “fringe
benefit” from my hospital stay
___VĚSTNÍK
was the loss of about 25 pounds,
which makes me feel reál good;
however, I would not recommend
this method as a means of losing
weight. At any rate, I look forward
to a full schedule of activities this
fall.
Youth Department. All of the
YADs háve nov; been held and as
of this writing, the last of the
summer camps are taking plače.
Camp appears to be a very attrac-
tive feature of our Youth Program.
It is a good outlet for their ener-
gies and the experiences encoun-
tered are good. I was able to at-
tend only one of the YADs, but
from all reports that háve come to
me, these were all very suecessful
and a iittle bigger in all of the
districts this year. We thank the
youngsters and their parents for
their eager and enthusiastic par-
ticipation. As one member put it:
“Iťs really wonderful to witness
the participation of so many young
people and to see the support of
their parents.” It does require both
•and we thank you! Congratula-
tions to all the first-place winners,
and remember, we will see your
craft and talent entries at the
State YAD at Temple High School
on Sunday, September 7th, and the
State Royalty hosted by Lodge 80
in Holland on Saturday, september
27 th. Good luck to all of you again
on these two occasions and I hope
to see all of you and a lot of par-
ents and supporters at these two
events. Many of our members
feel that all of this should really
be considered an investment. We
háve a youth program second to
none and I am proud of everyone
associated with it. There are no
plans or discussions to cut back
on our youth program. Most of
this is mandated by our conven-
tions any ho w. It is very evident
that our youth activities háve been
steadiiy increasing over the years.
That should say something for our
official attitudes and policies to-
ward the youth.
New Lodge And New Lodge
Ruildings. This past summer saw
the organization oř a new lodge
and the dedication and opening of
one new lodge home. The charter-
ing of Pinewood Heritage No. 178
took plače in Longview on 28
June. The lodge has well over 100
charter members and the poten-
tial for continued growth looks
good in that area. We wish the
____________
officers and members of Lodge 178
continued success and we welcome
them into our SPJST family. The
dedication and grand opening of
the new home of Lodge 154 in Fort
Worth took plače on Saturday,
July 26th as part of a two-day
celebration. The attendance was
good throughout the weekend and
from all indications the opening
and attendant activities were a
genuine success. (Reports in the
Vestnik).
On October 26th, the member-
ship of Lodge 13 Dime Box will
háve the grand opening and dedi-
cation of their new lodge home.
Lodge 13 is among the charter
lodges of the SPJST dating back to
1897 which has recently become
very active and has been experi-
encing a good healthy growth in
membership and lodge activities.
The complete story will be told on
October 26th. The lodge member-
ship at Lodge 18 in Elgin is also
making good progress towards the
eompletion of their new lodge
home, but as of this writing the
dáte for the official opening and
dedication has not been set. Lodge
18 is likewise one of our charter
lodges and its story parallels pret-
ty much the story at Lodge 13 in
Dime Box. That story will also be
told at the opening and dedica-
tion.
The dedication of three new
lodge homes in one year is unpre-
ecdented in recent history of the
SPJST and certainly indicates an
active and enthusiastic member-
ship at the three lodges, and at the
newly-chartered lodge.
In addition, we háve seen the
merger of two lodges in the Mouí-
ton area, námely, Lodges Pokrok
Moulton 27 and Culak No. 105.
These were officially merged on
Wednesday, July 9th. (See recent
issue of the Vestnik). The new
Moulton Lodge 184 should make
good progress toward becoming
one of our active lodges. We wish
them well!
HB 1765. The latter part of Apríl,
I was privileged to appear before
the Insurance Committee of the
House in Austin, which was hold-
ing hearings on proposed HB 1705,
which would háve required licens-
ing of agents selling life Insur-
ance in Texas, including those af-
filiated with Fraternal Benefit So-
cieties. I had the benefit of a
lot of good advice from the offi-
