Reading and Writing
If I were suddenly asked what sub-
jects a youngster shouldi try to master,
by quick answer would be: reading and
writing.
Without ability to read easily and with
comprehension, where can one go‘ or
get? Without ability to compose one’s
thoughts, how can one communicate?
Somewherc along the line in my life-
time, reading and writing, as primary
and fundame.ntal sub jects, were belittled
and downgraded.
How this happened I don’t know, but
I do know tliat the consequence is shock-
ing to our foremost educators, inclad-
i,ng Dr. James B. Conant, former presi-
dent of Harvard.
The assumption today among far too
many parents and school superinten-
dents seems to be that the ability to read
and write comes naturally, like breath-
ing.
One needs only to look around to
preeeive the fallacy of such thinking.
Seated at desks in offices across the
land are thousands of persons who can’t
spěli, write an effective letter, or read
and understand the conte.nts of a trade
journal.
They are štuek with medioere jobs
and their employers are štuek with them.
