to a total of $1.5 toillioii.
Deatli payments on individua! lile
Insurance under “ordinary” policies
rose by $57.8 million, or 3.3 per cent to
a total of $1.8 billion. Industrial life In-
surance payments amonnted to $22.9.9
million, an increade of $4.5 million over
the same period last year.
Many life insurance policies combine
permanent and term (or temporary)
protection in a single pian at lower
costt than if eacli type of insurance
were bought separaitely.
These combination plans now ae-
count for about 35 per cent of all “or-
dinary” life insurance purchased in
the United States, aocording to the
Institute of Life Insurance. (“Ordi-
nary” policies are purchased on an in-
dividua! basis, generally through life
insurance agents, in amounts of $1,-
000 or more).
Most families háve basic, life-long
insurance needs that are met by per-
manent life insurance, which can be
;kept in force ad long as the policy-
holder lives, with no increase in pre-
miums as he grows older.
But many families — particularly
younger parents, With limited incomes
and heavy financial responsibilities —
also háve speciál needd that can be
covered by term insurance.
Some combination plans provide
both the permanent and term coverage
as integrál parts of a single policy. Or
the term insurance can merely be add-
ed to a permanent policy as a “rider”
<or extra agreement.
For example, many life companies
■offer mortgage redemption insurance
!for paying off the balance due on. a
mortgage if the policyholder should
die. The arnount of insurance decreades
each year at about the same rate that
a typical home mortgage is amortized.
Bider Costs Less. With one life coin-
pany, a separate $10,000 policy to cov-
er a 20-year mortgage would cost a
30-year-old man about $48 a year. But
the same protection added to a per-
manent policy would cost him only
about $33 a year.
Another papular combination policy
is the “family income pian.” If the
policyholder should die1 within a cer-
tain nurnber of yeard, his family would
receive a monthly income for the re-
mainder of that period (in addition to
the basic arnount of permanent insur-
ance).
A “family pian” is a shnilar-sound-
ing but quite different policy. It typic-
ally provides a base of permanent in-
V Ě Ů T N f K
surance on a husband, plus smaller
amounts of term insurance on his) wife
and young’ children. The wife’s cov-
erage usually expires when she reaches
age 65, and the ohildreiTs when they
:reach age 22 or 25, depending on the
particular policy.
