NEIGHBORS SPOTLIGHT
Couple building dreams again in Yorktown
EARLIE BUSHONG
News Editor
So, how did Ray Brewer, a general con-
tractor, and Judy (Jordan) Brewer, a
licensed painter, end up opening their
remodeling business, Dreambuilders, in
Yorktown?
“Ray was bom in Texas near Fort Worth,
and I grew up in North Carolina,” Judy
said. “We met in Florida where Ray was
the contractor on a job in Melbourne. He
needed a drywall/paint contractor; and after
seven months, he finally convinced me to
take the job. I tell everyone he married me
so he wouldn’t have to pay me.”
Ray laughed and agreed with her.
Judy also claims that Ray drug her away
from Florida to Texas.
“He kept telling me how beautiful Texas
was, so I finally agreed to come with him
to help build a big deck for his friends,
Babe Markowsky and his wife JoAnn, who
live near Mound Creek,” she said. “We
arrived during the drought five years ago.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1029
in DeWitt County determined a couple of
years ago to make its presence known. It has
done that.
In less than a year, the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial was started in Yorktown. Last week,
a 1962 UH-1B helicopter was added to that
memorial.
The completed memorial will be dedicated
on Memorial Day, May 30.
As veterans and friends assisted, the troop
carrier helicopter was unloaded last Tuesday
by crane donated by Dunn Services and placed
on top of a display stand in front of the nine
flags that line the memorial.
When completed the memorial flags, heli-
copter, memorial plaque and 12 crosses repre-
senting the 12 veterans from DeWitt County
that died as a result of that war, 1962-1975.
The nine flags flying at the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial in Yorktown include
American, Texas, Prisoner of War/Missing In
Action, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and
Coast Guard.
With 52 members of the DeWitt County
chapter, the memorial has been financed
through fund raisers, donations and pledges

County gets
‘clean audit’
from Victoria
CPA firm

“Overall, the county is in fairly good
shape,” Dennis Cihal, CPA with Harrison,
Waldrop and Uherek of Victoria, said while
presenting DeWitt County’s annual audit
report.
Meeting with the Commissioner’s Court
last week, Cihal noted the audit covered the
2009-10 fiscal year for the county. He said it
was a “clean audit,” meaning no substantial
problems were noted.
“(DeWitt County’s) books are al-ways in
good shape,” Cihal said.
The document indicates this is the 28th
year the county has earned a certificate of
achievement for excellence in financial
reporting from the Government Finance
Officers Association of the U.S. and
Canada.
The report indicates the county had total
revenues of $10.1 million last year while
expenditures also totalled $10.1 million.
The county was able to transfer almost
$588,000 to fund balances giving it a total of
$8.9 million in fund balances. Of that
amount, $4.2 million is in the general fund
balance.
