Texas in Austin.
Both of these organizations are
striving to preserve its Czech heri-

Brothers and Sisters, you are en-
couraged to attend these functions

Times do change. There were
times when some SPJST lodges
would advertise on the rádio for a
benefit and háve it announced as a
PSA (Public Service Announce-
ment); however, when the rádio
announcer began to pronounce the
letters for the SPJST Halí, he
would, almost invariably say, “Gee
you háve to sneeze to say that!”
Your editor never saw any comedy
or need for such statements,
because I never found that sneezing
would help anyone pronounce
“SPJST.”
It is gratifying to know now that
announcers discuss the affairs to be
held at certain SPJST lodges and
never seem to háve any trouble in
the pronunciation of those five
initials.
Moreover, in the Central Texas
area, (Waco KWTX-TV and Temple
KCEN-TV) announcers háve no
difficulty in announcing events at
various lodges.
For example, Lodge No. 177
SPJST, Academy has had advertise-
ments on KCEN-TV Channel 6
telling of benefits for the school, fire
department, and other charitable or-
ganizations; it is a comforting
thought to háve the publicity that
the SPJST gains by announcers NOT
having to sneeze to pronounce those
five letters. Evidently, Times háve
changed!
Frequently, we are confronted
with a question: “What does
‘Pokrok’ represent?”
First of all the question could be
answered in several dífferent places
at the same time because there are
many local SPJST lodges having the
word “Pokrok” as a part of the
name; approximately 14 lodges must
mean something important, or háve
powerful symbolic connotation.
“Pokrok” in the Czech language is
ušed as often as its English equiv-
alent. The word denotes the action
or the process of advancing or
improving by marked stages or
degrees. It also denotes movement
forward as in time or space:
“Progrese.”
To fully understand the implica-
tion and the close connection of the
use of this word “progrese” with a
fraternal organization, an individual
must look into the background of
those men who had associated the
term with their lodge work. Only in
the light of their historical
background can the popularity of
the word “progress” be understood.
Actually, the history of the
Czechs dates back to the fifth
century, to the days when Angles
Saxons, and Jutes were beginning to
colonize England. We also wish to
point out that, for nearly 1200 years,
the Czech people, living in Bohemia
and Moravia, retained their cultural
unity in špite of numerous invasions.
By the end of the 16th century they
lost their independence. An
estimated amount of several
thousand people had left their
country because of ruthless treat-
ment. The latě Dr. Henry R. Maresh
mentioned in his work, “The Czechs
in Texas”: “The population fell from
three million to less than one million.
Books were destroyed, names were
changed, executions and
confiscation were the rule.
Thereafter, for a century, tradition
of the cultural achievements was
kept alive only by word of mouth in
the huts of the peasant folk.”
Therefore, the traditional longing
for independence, improvement, and
betterment was also in the blood of
the Czech immigrants and, political
oppression removed, they began to
organize fraternal societies and
build schooís. The appreciation of
freedom, the hope for quick cultural
advancement, the desire to gratify
the inherent craving for improve-
ments; all of this was best expressed
by adopting the term “Pokrok”, and
by naming the various local lodges in
the SPJST Lodge as Lodge Pokrok
Texasu No. 1, Fayetteville,
(Progress of Texas) No. 1, Fay-
etteville, Lodge Pokrok Slovanů
(Progress of Slavs) No. 31, Yoakum;
Lodge Pokrok Rowena No. 49,

minds!
