The home Computer—like tele-
vision in the 1950s —is quickly
becoming part of our lives. But don’t
rush out and buy one without doing
your homework.
Choosing a home Computer is a
complicated decision. Také the time
to shop thoroughly and test the
dozens of models being offered.
These steps can savé you plenty of
money.
Function. Consider what you want
the Computer to do for you. If you
want a Computer to perform one job
— balance your bank aecount, for
example — perhaps you should
consider a simple systém that may
be plugged into your television set.
If you want a Computer for games
only, you can buy a machine that
does that alone. It sells for a fraction
of the cost of a home Computer,
which can range from $500 to
$10,000 or more.
Components. With the inexpensive
models, you get just the centrál
Processing unit, a typewriterlike
keyboard and limited memory
capability. As prices escalate, more
memory and other components — a
screen, a cassette recorder, a
printer — can be added.
Demonstration models. Most
Computer retailers háve demon-
stration models set up in their
showrooms. Don’t be bashful — ask
to operáte the Computer yourself.
Only by actually trying your hand at
word processing, inserting and
using programs and so on, can you
really understand the workings of a
Computer. Be sure to check the
warranty. What about servicing?
Are software and additional hard-
ware readily available? Does the
retailer offer classes or any kind of
telephone Service to answer
questions quickly?
For more information. Additional
Service is available in a new booklet,
“Tips on Buying a Home Computer.”

addressed, stamped, business-size

Business Bureaus, 1515 Wilson
Boulevard, Arlington, Va. 22209.

Consumers who use automatic
teller machines to do their banking
are being urged to be on the alerťfor
con artists taking advantage of the
new technology. In one scheme, a
stranger at one of the machines
waited until a bank customer had
put his card into the machine and
then told him the machine was out of
order. After the customer left, the
stranger made a withdrawal from
the customeťs account.

Why Beautification?-
by Grover Keeton, First Vice President and Liaison
to Distríct Governors, Beautify Texas Council
In today’s society, when advocating a program or a project particuíarly involving of an
individuaTs time, funds and support, a majority of the people will ask WHY, WHAT and
WHERE and sometimes WHO? Advocates of a program may find themselves challenged
by citizens or authorities whose priority of time and resources are limited and important.
Therefore, we must be prepared to answer questions, even the basic, including “WHY A
BEAUTIFICATION PROGRAM?” Most everyone accepts beautification, but are they
aiways willing to include beautification as one of their priorities?
First, let us face the facts. Not every person in this statě or in our community views a
beautification program or project as a city wide responsibility. Why? It is often said —
—“Let the four or five people on the beautification committee do it.”
— “Other skills and interests compete for my time and resources.”
— “I pay high taxes, government should do it.”
— "Pass an anti-Iitter ordinance, this is a police problém.”
— “How do you determine the results —you can’t measure the immeasurable.”
—“Leťs first focus on crime, traffic, economy and high cost of living,
unemployment, etc.”
—Then, come back and “I will help plant some flowers and piek up some litter” (a
tunnel vision).
Regardless how high on the scale we plače beautification and all of its programs, we
cannot completely escape from some confrontations in both the political and civic aréna.
We must convey that beautification is more than just a one-week project and that our
goals are broader and well understood. Even in beautification, it is important to focus on
fundamental questions. Such as what are we really trying to accomplish? What are our
plans to accomplish a short- and long-range beautification program? One of the keys to
obtaining the “right” answers in beautification is similar to the primary fundamental
principles of management-/'.e., people involvement meshed in with those who háve
questions with those who háve similar aspirations, which is an apt deseription of the
Beautify Texas Council.
SO, WHY BEAUTIFICATION?
Perhaps because it can bring about.
1. More than just beautifying a neighborhood, a town or a statě
2. Renewal of pride—in this čase, pride is good and encouraged
3. Development of people and quality of life, not of things—technology will not
becotne the master; people and their environment are still the master. Technology is
only a branch,
4. Brings people together sharing their best attiíude and input; many of these people
háve reached a plateau and ready to branch out into the community and/or statě.
5. Uplífting and growth experience
6.1t is pfogressive, attracts other people; it is contagious
7. Beautification is a positive preseription to deveiop the personality of a neighborhood,
a town or the statě
8. Experience positive action to achieve other civic improvements
9. Many times unintended or unexpected positive action will surface
10.A city-wide beautification program could improve the economy
11 .It is capable of being measured
12.Beautification is not a two ór three-person program. Although two or three people
may také the lead and serve as the “movers and shakers” to “start the program.” In
beautification, people will inereasingiy turn to others for support and assistance.
People and beautification are synonymous.
