SIM Celebrating
PeopleinAction
American humorist Erma
Bombeck once said, “Volunteers are
the only human beings on the face of
the earth who reflect this nation’s
compassion, unselfish caring, pa-
tience, and just plain love for an-
other.”
Established in 1974, National
Volunteer Week has grown expo-
nentially in scope each year since,
drawing the support and endorse-
ment of all subsequent United States
presidents, governors, mayors, and
other respected elected officials.
National Volunteer Week is about
inspiring, recognizing, and encour-
aging people to seek out imaginative
ways to engage in their communi-
ties. Iťs about demonstrating to the
nation that by working together, in
unison, we háve the fortitude to meet
our challenges and accomplish our
goals. National Volunteer Week is
about taking action, encouraging in-
dividuals and their respective com-
munities to be at the center of sociál
change -discovering and actively
demonstrating their collective power
to foster positive transformation.
National Volunteer Week is not
only our moment in time to celebrate
our volunteers, but to enable a nation
to share ideas, practices, and stories,
wherever they happen thereby shap-
ing a movement to re-imagine the
notion of citizenship for the 21st
century.
National Volunteer Week is Apríl
10 to 16. Thank you, SPJST volun-
teers, for your time and Service to
SPJST and communities across the
statě. You are making a difference
in everything you do.
I’ll Show You A Volunteer
Show me a person who spends
endless hours in training without
pay,
And, TU show you a volunteer.
Show me a person where a cryfor
help brings split-second dispatch,
And, Pil show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is devas-
tated when lives are lost or maimed,
And, TU show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is gra-
ciously welcomed as a next-door
neighbor,
And, TU show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who takés
ridicule more than compliments,
And, TU show you a volunteer.
Show me a person whose car is
garaged with the grillefacing out,
And, TU show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who sacrifices
home life, TV . . . even tender mo-
ments,
And, TU show you a volunteer.
Show me a person visibly moved
at the strains of our National An-
them,
And, TU show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who may be
asked to give more than just dedica-
tion,
And, TU show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is asked to
give more . . . and more . . . and
more,
And, TU show you a volunteer.
