10/VESTNIK—Wednesday, February 24,1999
Later, St. Paul Lutheran Church School
children from Thomdale, Texas visited
with the residents. A birthday party
celebration was enjoyed, topped off
with Twilight Bingo. Beach Balí and
one to one visits with Dorothy Hill
(Vol) provided some exercise and live-
ly conversation on Fridays. The resi-
dents were led in song by Leroy
Niemtschk, Harold Nelson, Elroy
Lieberum and Calvin Bukhorn with
Winston Anderson accompanying on
accordion and piano and guitar led the
group in song.
On Saturdays, the residents enjoyed
watching rented movies or the staffs’
own favorite movies brought from
home. Dominos and games were
available much of the day also. The
big bird aviary located in the rest
home’s lobby was a favorite attraction
of the residents. There are a wide vari-
ety of birds to observe—diamond
doves, canaries, orange weavers, zebra
finches, golden finches, button quails.
On any given day, the residents and
visitors can watch the birds také baths,
eat, build their nests, plus enjoy the
new babies.
Sincerely,
Paulině Kovar,
Activity Director

Fayette County Chapter
of the Czech Heritage
Society of Texas
The Fayette County Chapter of the
Czech Heritage Society of Texas met
on Sunday, January 17, 1999 at the
Senior Citizen Center at 255 North
Franklin in La Grange for its regularly
scheduled quarterly meeting with 32
members in attendance.
President Cathy Chaloupka called
the meeting to order and asked mem-
bers to pledge allegiance to the flag.
An agenda for the meeting was circu-
lated among members. A gracious
welcome was extended in both Czech
and English. Bertha Kruše, newest
member, was introduced and wel-
comed to the Chapter.
The minutes from the December 13,
1998 meeting were read and approved
with motion made by Lillie Kaderka
and Lowell Kubala seconding the
motion. The motion carried.
The Treasury report was accepted as
presented by Treasurer Rudy Minarcik.
Irene Polanský reported on perfor-
mances by the Fayette Czech Singers
and Dancers which included participat-
ed in French Legation Museum/s
Second Annual Texas Christmas
Traditions on December 6 in Austin
and upcoming dancing workshop at the
SPJST halí in Fayetteville to be held
by Donna and Guenter Merkle for
Czech Folk Dancing on January 30,
Czech Singers will be performing at
the All Slavic Day at St. Thomas
University Houston on April 25 wherč
the Czechs are host this year, and May
1 at the Czech Fest at Rosenberg
where both the Fayette singers and
dancers will perform.
President Chaloupka reported that
the State Budget was approved which
was signed off by Jerome Mazoch.
CEFT (A&M) is seeking a donation
from the Chapter. In the past, a similar
donation was made to the University of
Texas-Czech Chair. In being fair with
donations, suggestion was made to
donate $100 for the Texas A&M CEFT
sending exchange students to further
Czech culture. This was put in form of
a motion by Clarence Matula and sec-
onded by Rudy Minarcik. The motion
carried.
Members were asked to give a show
of hands of those in attendance speak-
ing Czech. A few raised their hands so
suggestion was made to enroll in class-
es being offered this semester for both
beginners and advanced course in
Czech at Blinn College at
Schulenburg. President Chaloupka
urged everyone to enroll to become
more proficient in the íanguage in
speaking and writing.
Membership Recruitment
Rudy Minarcik reported on mem-
bership thus far and stated that to dáte,
the Chapter has 90 members that háve
paid their dues for 1999. Suggestions
were made to entice more people to
join because the membership dues of
only $12 per year is well worth the
price of fellowship of the organization
and pro.motion and preservation of the
Czech culture. Several recommenda-
tions were made to stimulate and to
bring in new members which includes
the personál invitation along with
notices in newspapers, etc.
Preservation of Czech history
through family history is being pro-
moted which involves taping conversa-
tions, stories etc. from the senior citi-
zens, jotting down interesting facts.
The need to motivate the younger gen-
eration was also discussed in recording
this history about the ancestors.
Defining the Mission
A mission statement for the organi-
zation was discussed in that many
question “what do you do” or “what is
the purpose of the organization?”
Fund raising was mentioned as
money helps but giving of ourselves
and our time, food, etc. makes for a
good fraternal organization. The sug-
gestion was made to go home with the
thought, “I am Czech” and go from
there, which should include getting
more publicity for the things that are
doně to promote Czech culture.
Also, a suggestion was made to put
up a table on the square in La Grange
on the first Saturday of the month to stir
interest and spread knowledge about the
organization and its goals, etc.
Fayetteville will host the State
Meeting on November 20, 1999 at the
SPJST Halí in Fayetteville. The menu
was discussed which will include roast
pork, potatoes, sauerkraut, Czech pas-
íries, etc. Georgie and Elmont Vyvial
volunteered to be chairpersons for the
kitchen and food preparation. Rudy
Minarcik will check with Robert
Skrabanek to be speaker for the event
and Carolyn Meiners will check with
Ben Rychlek. Decorations will be han-
dled by Helen Mikus and Carolyn
Meiners. Members were asked to
think about dooř prizes such as Czech
items, pictures, dolls, cookbooks, bas-
