Apríl 29 ...
International
Dance Day
By Dr. Bob Uzzel
Lodge 6, Cottonwood
April 29 was International Dance
Day. This celebration was introduced
in 1982 by the International Dance
Committee of the International The-
atre Institute (ITI). The dáte was sug-
gested by Russian teacher and
choreographer Pyotr Gusev to com-
memorate the birthday of French bal-
let master Jean-Georges Noverre.
Among the goals of International
Dance Day are to inerease the aware-
ness of the importance of dance
among the generál public and to per-
suade govemments all over the world
to provide a proper plače for dance
curriculum in primary, secondary, and
higher education.
Every year, a public figuře is cho-
sen to write a message that is dissem-
inated worldwide. The author of the
2010 intemational message is the
renowned Argentinian dancer Julio
Bocca, who wrote: “Dance is disci-
plině, work, teaching, communication.
With it, we savé on words that perhaps
others would not understand and, in-
stead, we establish a universal lan-
guage familiar to everyone. It gives us
pleasure, it makes us free, and it com-
forts us from the impossibility we hu-
mans háve to fly like birds, bringing
us closer to heaven, to the sacred, to
the infinite.”
ITI invited all dance institutions,
govemment institutions, ministries of
culture, dance practitioners, and dance
lovers to join in the 2010 celebration.
In the past, activities háve included
translation of the message and the bi-
ography of the author in their coun-
try’s language(s); promotion of the
message to the public at large; reading
of the message to dance audiences be-
fore April 29 performances; organiza-
tion of events such as intemational or
national dance festivals; organization
of speciál performances, symposia,
colloquia, and round tables; circula-
tion of information in the media; giv-
ing of awards; inauguration of new
performing arts venues and dance
companies; distribution of articles on
dance and comments on the intema-
tional message in joumals and news-
papers; rádio and tele vision broadcasts
about dance; organization of meetings
between artists and students interested
in dance and other performing arts; or-
ganization of tributes to dancers
through speciál events in cinemas,
