FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
Spring Meetings
Start March 2
Iťs That Time Again
SPJST’s district spring meetings
get underway on Sunday, March 2
with District Five members meeting
at Lodge 172, Pasadena. If you’re a
member of District Five, please make
plans to attend.
Within the SPJST, our spring dis-
trict meetings provide us with the
opportunity to provide the member-
ship with an overview of the
Society’s performance during the pre-
vious year and a preview of the
SPJST’s course of direction for the
coming year. An effective spring
meeting can help to reestablish a
sense of purpose and direction within
a district.
In addition to conducting the regu-
lar and essential business of the dis-
trict, whoever coordinates the meet-
ing may want to consider allotting
some time for members to participate
in group discussion. So many good
questions can be overlooked when
we assume that everyone knows the
answer.
The SPJST and its local lodges
háve an ever-changing set of business
and fraternal issues, legal require-
ments and challenges with which to
content. The very existence of our
Society is directly related to the
effectiveness of our ability to under-
stand and deal with these topics.

In Čase You Missed It
If you ha ven’t noticed by now, Til
let you in on something — the SPJST
2003 calendar included two February
24ths. Or to put it another way —
there’s no February 25! Thaťs an
error, of course; however, there is a
silver lining to this story. When I
called it to the attention of our print-
er, the SPJST did receive a $400 dis-
count off the purchase price of this
yearis calendar.
As you can imagine, we received
several calls, bringing this item to our
attention. My favorite — if there
can be such a thing — was the kind
lady who called and asked if we had
“some good reason” for repeating the
dáte on the calendar. With the receiv-
er pressed against my ear, I thought
for some ciever reply, but instead, all
I could say — and somewhat sheep-
ishly — was, “No, it was a mistake.”
Interesting to notě is that February
24 happens to mark the anniversary of
Allied ground campaign attack in the
1991 Gulf War. The Allied offensive
known as “Operation Desert Storm”
actually started in the wee hours of
January 17, 1991 with a massive air
oífensive to liberate Kuwait. As far as
wars go, it was a short one. The flag
of free Kuwait was raised in celebra-
tion on February 27. And on Aprií 3,
The United Nations Security Couricil
approved the cease-fire agreement in
the Gulf, calling on Iraq to respect the
boundaries, pay war compensation,
and destroy all Chemical, biological,
and nuclear weapons.
In this season of geo-political
unrest, the threat of war and terrorist
attacks continues to blanket the air-
waves. Now, and in the days to
come, may we remain ever mindful
of America’s sons and daughters
deployed in the Middle East, answer-
ing their nation’s call to duty. And, if
you are so inclined, remember them
in your prayers.
Patriotism is easy to understand in
America. It means looking out for
yourself by looking out for your
country.
