Bucs Advance as the Number One
Independent Team
by Eric Fox
The battling Buc baseball
team addvance to the playoffs as
the number one independent team
on Saturday with a win over
Schreiner, 9-4. The Buc’s will
now play St. Edward’s University
in the first round of the playoffs.
The playoffs are a best two out of
three series. The first game will
be on Friday, May 1 at 3:00 p.m.
at St. Edward’s in Austin. The
second game will be in George-
town at our field. If necessary a
third game will be played
immediately after the second
game. The start for the games in
Georgetown will be at noon. The
winner of our series will play the
winner of the Schreiner-St.
Mary’s playoff series.
The Buc’s advanced to the
playoffs with a comeback win.
Schreiner scored three runs in the
first inning off of starter, Mike
Timlin. However, the Buc’s
battled back in the bottom of the
first with three runs of their own.
Jim Phillips hit his ninth home
run of the year to account for two
of the three runs. The Buc’s took
the lead in the fourth with a 410
foot blast off of the bat of Danny
Cohen. The home run was
Cohen’s seventeenth of the year.
The Buc’s put the game away in
the fifth when they scored three
runs. A clutch pinch hit by Jeff
Giusti drove in two of the runs.
Timlin settled down after the first
and threw seven innings of
shutout ball. Schreiner scored a
lone run in the ninth, but it was
too little too late. Mike Timlin
struck out twelve Schreiner
batters and allowed only seven
hits, all of which were singles.
One final note about the ball
game, Don Shelton extended his
hitting streak to 25 games with
three hits in the ball game.
Sexuality in the Late ‘80’s
by Margaret Parker
On April 7th and 9th,
workshops were conducted on
Sexuality in the Late Eighties by
Dr. Fred Dooley. Dr. Ed Kain,
and Dr. Joan Grferie. The pur-
pose of the seminars was to
discuss sexual relationships, their
formation and maintenance, in
light of the threats posed by
AIDS and other sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs).
Although many issues were
covered in the two days, this
article will focus on the
information given by Dr. Kain on
AIDS.
Dr. Kain is currently working
on a book on AIDS and its impact
on the media, the medical
profession, and families. His in-
formation was very negative for
those who have AIDS, but
somewhat more optimistic for
those who have not yet been
exposed to the virus. To date,
every case of AIDS has resulted
in death. Although there is now a
blood test to.determine if you
have been exposed to the HIV
virus, it cannot tell you whether
or not you have or ever will
develop AIDS or AIDS-related
comples (ARC). Although the
virus has been detected in
insignificant amounts in saliva,
sweat, tears, mother’s milk, and
vaginal fluids, the only means of
transmission are through the ex-
change of blood, the exchange of
semen, or being bom to a person
with AIDS. This makes it
relatively easy to know if you are
putting yourself at risk. Dr. Kain
cited two studies, one on family
members of people with AIDS
and another on hospital workers.
In the first, only one of 128
subjects who had had contact
with the fluids other than blood
or semen tested positive for the
virus. Of over 1700 hospital
employees who had definitely
been exposed to the vims (such
as accidently pricking themselves
with an infected needle), only
two had tested positive. None of
these three has developed AIDS
or ARC. However, the virus has
a very long incubation period and
it may be as many as eight years
before any actual symptoms ap-
pear, so it is still imperative that

Acing Finals with PMA
by Laura Riggs
When I took a wilderness
survival course several years ago,
the instructor asked us what was
the most important thing needed
to survive. Most of us gave an-
swers such as water or shelter.
He told us that the key to survival
is a positive mental attitude
(PMA). One could have shelter,
warm clothing, and plenty of
food and water, but without a
strong PMA, survival chances
were greatly reduced
The same holds true with
finals. At this time of the
semester, many students figure
what they need to make on the
final to attain a desired grade, be
it an A or just barely passing.
Feeling that the needed score is
mpossible to attain, many simply
