The Band eating at Wharton
Band Tour
by Michelle Boykin
This year’s Southwestern
Symphonic Band tour began last
Wednesday with the concert in
Alma Thomas Theatre. Everyone
who attended heard songs such as
Festive Overture, Folde Song
Suite, and Rittno Fondo, to name
just a few. After a wonderful
performance there was a mad
flurry of band members gathering
music, putting up stands and
packing instruments.
After an early breakfast the
next morning (thanks to SAGA
who opened the Commons at
6:45) and all bags had been
stowed, the bus left promptly at
7:30 (well, maybe a few minutes
later). After the initial
excitement wore off, many
bleary-eyed folks caught a few
z’s until the first stop on the
itinerary. Bren ham - home of the
Blue Bell ice cream and Brenham
High School where our first con-
cert of the day was to be held.
Band members changed into
black attire and set up the "stage"
in the band hall. As soon as the
percussionists had made sure
everything was in order, students
in the audience were seated. And
it was finally decided what would
be played first, the concert was
underway. In addition to the
songs mentioned above, Alarums
and Glaxon were well received.
When everything had been
loaded, clothes changed, and
lunch eaten at a local Bar-B-Que
joint, it was back on the road.
Destination: B.F. Terry High
School. The concert was played
with relatively few problems - the
band director there was quite
helpful.
On the road again, this time in
Houston traffic, we made our way
to the Methodist church where
our last concert of the day was to
be held. The sanctuary was quite
large and had beautiful stained
glass, and to top it off members
of the church took the time to
feed up a wonderful meal of
hamburgers. Some of us were
hungry (right Ann?)
At the concert there were
some solo contributions. Donny
and Ann Meadows both sang so-
los, Kristin Baker played her
song Blue Over White on the
piano, and the Flute Quartet also
played. Student conductor Beth
Powell was given the podium for
America the Beautiful, and the
concert ended with the ever popu-
lar Klaxon. (Some say that if
George Nelson were a song, he
would be the Klaxon.)

appropriate risk-reducing mea-
sures be taken if you put yourself
in danger of exposure to the
virus.-
According to Dr. Kain,
although AIDS has been
protrayed as primarily a
"homosexual disease," the rate at
which it is occurring among the
gay population has significantly
decreased, in some areas as much
as 90%. Unfortunately, the in-
cidence of AIDS has been
steadily on the increase among
heterosexuals. Whether or not
you or your partner has ever had
a homosexual encounter, there is
no way to know for sure if
somewhere down the line some-
body did, or used an infected
hypodermic needle, or received
an infected blood transfusion. If
you do engage in activities that
put you at risk, particularly
genital or anal intercourse or
fellatio ("giving head"), use a
condom. It is the form of
protection most advocated by
AIDS experts, provided the
condom is fresh, unbroken, and
properly positioned.
If you think you may have
been exposed to the virus, contact
the Austin-Travis County Health
Department at (512) 469-2070, or
the toll free AIDS .Hotline at 1-
800-342-AIDS, for information
on testing your blood. Dr.
Offerle had her blood tested at
the Austin Health Department for
the workshop and reports that it
cost ten dollars and was
completely confidential. There is
also a great deal of literature
available to pick up on the table
outside Jan Pickett’s office in the
field house.
