Retired Teachers Still
Giving To Youngsters
Week after week the many fine service groups in Newton County receive lots of publicity and are
often even recognized with special awards. One organization goes about the life’s work of its
members even after they have left their profession and retired. In the case of the Newton County
Retired Teachers Association, these educators remain dedicated to the contribution of knowl-
edge to those young people just beginning the public school process. Each year these unique-
ly thoughtful individuals take on a particularly valuable program. During Public School Week,
March 9-13, members of the Newton County Retired Teachers Association went to Newton and
Burkeville Elementary Schools where they gave every 2nd grade student a new book as part of
the organization’s statewide Retired Teachers Book Project. Books were displayed in each
classroom so that every student had the opportunity to choose a book to keep for their very own.
The educators gave a total of 130 books to the 2nd graders. Members enjoy participating in the
giving and donate extra funds each year to purchase these books. Anyone can help by donat-
ing money to purchase books for this very worthwhile cause.

During the middle 1940s, there
were traveling sideshows arriving
in Newton. Some were shows
with performers like country west-
ern singers, others were selling
different “cure all” items. Many
were carnivals while others were
revivals. My father wasn’t a very
religious person but would take
Mother to the revivals when they
came into town. Mom loved to
sing the old hymns and listen to
the preachers. Of course, either
