THE APOSTOLIC VOICE
BRO DAVE MCLANE, APOS-
TOLIC TABERNACLE UPC
CHURCH HISTORY & EVAN-
GELIZATION -THE BOOK OF
ACTS
The Book of Acts is said to be
the centerpiece of the Bible. It is
described as history, but it is far
more. The Old Testament builds
a foundation for the gospel
preached in Acts. The New Tes-
tament epistles are established
upon the accomplishments of the
churches built in Acts. These let-
ters (epistles) written to the
churches established by the
Apostles are mandates from God
to encourage them, and us today,
to continue in the same faith and
practice with which they were fa-
miliar from the time of their es-
tablishment (Galatians 1:8; Jude
3). It is church history seen from
the evangelistic and missionary
viewpoint, centering in the life and
activity of the Apostles who es-
tablished them.
We would literally have no
concept of the first church, the
doctrine as taught by Jesus, the
method of the gospel's progres-
sion, or the history of evangeliza-
tion without the book of Acts. As
a record of the first church, it
should be the norm of spiritual
balance. It gives what the Apos-
tles preached as the plan of sal-
vation, the proper mode and
formula for baptism. We can ex-
perience the infilling of the Holy
Ghost the way they did, for the
evidence of the Holy Ghost infill-
ings were made manifest and
recorded in Acts. We can find
much to rejoice over in finding
that our experiences parallel
those recorded in Acts, for it is the
record of the church that Jesus
said He would build (Matthew
16:18).
Acts lists many firsts in the
church: the first prayer meeting-
1:12-14; the first outpouring of the
Holy Ghost- 2:1-4; the first ser-
mon-2:14-40; the first converts-
2:41; first opposition and
persecution-4:2, 3; 5:18; the first
martyr-7:59; first missionary jour-
ney-13:4-14; first council-15:13.
If one wants to learn of cre-
ation, he begins in Genesis 1:1
where God says, "In the begin-
ning God created." To learn of
the beginning of the New Testa-
ment church we can find it in Acts
2:47 where we read for the first-
time, "And the Lord added to the
church daily such as should be
saved". The adding was the re-
sult of Peter's preaching the first
church sermon in Acts
2:14-42.
The central theme in Acts is
the progression of the gospel, the
good news which was, and still is,
operated by the Holy Ghost. This
promised Comforter (John14:26)
continues the work of Jesus in
Spirit, since "He dwelleth with
you, and shall be in you. I will not
leave you comfortless: I will come
to you" (John14:17, 18).
Acts is no different than the
rest of scripture when it comes to
the outcome of its purpose for all
mankind, which is to gain eternal
life after this earthly sojourn.
The Day of Pentecost (Acts 2)
illustrates the better covenant of
the Spirit. When the Law was
given in Exodus 32:28, three
thousand people died, but three
thousand were saved when the
Holy Ghost was given! To quote
Paul, ''.made us able ministers of
the new testament; not of the let-
ter, but of the spirit: for the letter
killeth, but the spirit giveth life" (II
Corinthians 3:6).
The Book of Acts is still open
since the church is still on earth.
But, "Behold, I shew you a mys-
tery; We shall not all sleep, but
we shall all be changed, In mo-
ment, in the twinkling of an eye,
at the last trump: for the trumpet
shall sound, and the dead shall
be raised incorruptible, and we
shall be changed" (I Corinthians
15:51,52).
