CELEBRATES 95th BIRTHDAY-
Kay Fountain of Jasper, grand-
father of Rosemary Johnson and
Vanessa Woods and great grand-
father of Daron Johnson, all of
Newton, celebrated his 95th birth-
day on February 14 with a host of
relatives and friends as shown
above. Kay was born February
12, 1914 in San Augustine,
Texas.
another grandchild graduate from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Sarah
Augusta Fuller, a 2005 graduate of Newton Hgh School, finished going Magna Cum Laude from
the College of Liberal and Applied Arts. This is the 3rd grandchild that they have proudly seen
graduate from SFA. Charley Fuller and Autumn Fuller King, Sarah’s brother and sister, are both
SFA alumni. And the long list of Lumberjacks doesn’t stop there! Charley’s wife, Sherry Nell
Fuller and Autumn’s husband Brian King also graduated from this same school. The
Commencement Exercises at the William Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches has been a cus-
tomary time of several generations joining together to celebrate Mr. and Mrs. Kirby’s anniversary.
And this year they will commemorate 61 years of wedded bliss on the last day of February.

SKATING-FROM PAGE 2
couple skating was allowed.
Time was also set aside for us
boys to race each other for a free
cold drink. That was great. It was
just good clean fun and you cpuld
use up a lot of energy. Perhaps
that’s why so many parents would
let, even encourage, us to go.
I never saw “Pop” Hubert after
leaving Newton in 1959 so I don’t
know what happened to him or
his skating rink. He provided a
very necessary form of entertain-
ment for the kids in our small
town. It was a time in our young
lives when we had a chance to
sit, visit, and make friends—a
time to enjoy each other’s com-
pany with no worries about the fu-
ture and what lay ahead for many
of us, a time to treasure friend-
ships and make life-long memo-
ries to enjoy in our old age.
Perhaps many of you old-
timers still have your skates in the
closet. Why not dig them out and
take a trip down memory lane
with your grandkids and/or great
grandkids?
