CROrS RESPONDING TO
GOOD GROWING
WEATHER
Refugio County crops are ma-
turing to a fair crop. Good
growing Weather has aided
farmers in getting crops clean
df weeds and making good
growth the past few weeks. A
good rain would be welcomed
by most farmers.
Farmers have been able to
clean- ux> most weedy cotton
fields with herbicides and hand
labor — herbicides were crop
savers for many farmers. With-
out the chemical weed control
measures, the crop would have
been lost due to expensive hand
labor. Cotton producers have
commented that herbicides will
be used by all next year.
Cotton has started growing
well with warmer nights. The
late crop is squaring. Insects
have not been a serious threat.
Fleahoppers are being control-
led where they have built up
serious population.
Grain sorghum is maturing
rapidly. The early plantings are
going into the dough stage.
Moisture could be used by much
of the crop. The shallow root-
ed plants are wilting. 'Sucker-
ing is a problem in many of the
fields. This could delay harvest.
!Hay bailing is in full swing in
the county. All baling equip-
ment is being used.
Ranges are drying out and
growth has slowed down with
the dryer open weather. Con-
ditions are excellent as the
grasses are curing. Livestock
in excellent condition. Yearling
cattle being shipped to feed-
lots and summer pastures out
of the state.
ANNUAL CROPS TOUR TO
BE HELD ON JUNE 21
Refugio County’s annual crops
tour will be held Tuesday, June
21 in the Bonnie View-Bayside
area. The tour will start at
1:30 p.m. at the R. M. Autry
DeKalb variety plots.
Stops will also be made at
the H. H. Olson Paymaster Va-
riety plots, Hartmann-Schubert
grain sorghum variety plots;
Voges-Boenig farms for grain
sorghum variety plots and the
W. C. Pfeil farm.
Other stops will be made at
cotton and grain sorghum weed
control demonstrations and a
parallel terrace demonstra-
tion.
The tour is sponsored by the
Refugio County Program Build-
ing Committee and a number
of commercial seed and chemi-
cal companies. A barbecue
supper will be served to per-
sons making the tour.
After a wet, cool spring,
crops are making headway to
an expected fair yield. Yields
are not expected to be near last
year’s record breaking crop.!
Farmers have come a long way
the past few weeks in getting
the crops clean of weeds.
