USD A Accepts Loan Applications
Applications for emergency farm
loans for losses caused by flooding,
hail, and high winds that occurred on
May 25-26 and June 11, 1999, are
being accepted at the Farm Service
Agency located in Tulia, Ross W.
James said today.
Briscoe and Swisher Counties are
two of seven in Texas recently named
by Secretary of Agriculture Dan
Glickman eligible for loans of up to
80 percent of theiractual losses or the
operating loan needed to continue in
business, whichever is less. For farm-
ers unable to obtain credit from pri-
vate commercial lenders, the interest
is 3.75 percent.
ai"As a general rule, a farmer must
h^ye sufTqjgd^.at least a 30. percent
loss of production to be eligiblefor an
FSA emergency loan," James said.
Farmers participating in the Federal
Crop Insurance program will have to
figure in proceeds from those pro-
grams in determining their loss.
"Applications for loans under this
emergency designation will be ac-
cepted until July 17,2000, but farm-
ers should apply as soon as possible.
Delays inapplyingcouldcreate back-
logs in processing and possibly over
into the new farming season," James
said.
FSA is a credit agency of the U.S
Department of Agriculture. It is au-
thorized to provide disaster emer-
gency loans to recognized farmers
who work at and rely on farming for
a substantial part of their living. Eli-
gibility is extended to individual
fanners who are U .S.- citizens and to,,
farming in partnerships, corporations
or cooperatives in which U.S. citi-
zens hold a majority interest.
