November tax rebate up 60.02 percent
For the first month of the state’s
reporting period, Port Aransas
logged a sizeable 60.02 percent in-
crease in sales tax rebates over the
same period last year.
-' The rebates, from sales taxes col-
- lected in November, followed a
•^healthy 78.42 percent increase
record for October sales.
The November rebate far exceeds
the state average for Texas cities of
20.5 percent over the same period a
year ago.
“This month’s sales tax rebates are
a good start to what could be an-
other good year in the Texas
I economy," said State Comptroller
> Carole Keeton Rylander.
The payment to Port Aransas for
November 1999 sales was
$37,750.31, compared to $23,590.94
for November 1998 sales.
Corpus Christi recorded a Novem-
I ber sales tax rebate up by 15.04 per-
cent.
Across the ship channel in
Aransas Pass, the rebate was up by
11.77 percent for November sales.

’ gering 91.75 percent from Novem-
ber 1998.

represented a 21.55 percent increase
in its November rebate. On the
southern Texas coast, Port Isabel
reported an increase of 27.86 per-
cent in its rebate for November.
South Padre Island deposited a re-
bate up by 38.28 percent for Novem-
ber.

Master sand sculptor Chip Cooper of Corpus Christi took advantage of the spring-like weather to come
build a haunted house, complete with gargoyles, towers and turrets, on the Port Aransas beach. Cooper
will be among the sand sculptors here in the Spring Sand Celebration 2000. which will be on the beach
April 7-9 under the sponsorship of Port Aransas Community Theater.
PACT is seeking sponsor
for Chinese sand sculptor
Port Aransas Community Theater
(PACT) is looking for a private spoil
sor to pay travel expenses (air fare)
for a young sand sculptor artist so
that he can participate in the Spring
Sand Celebration 2000.
The sculptor is Chen Daojun,
whose nickname is “Beach hoy" on
his e-mail address.
Beach hoy lives in Zhoushan City,
Zhejiang Province, near Shanghai.
Sharon Schafer, contest chairman,
said she had checked with Ameri-
can Airlines and the round trip to
Corpus Christi is about $3,000.
Needless to say, Schafer said,
PACT's budget cannot handle such
a cost.
“But what a great way to promote
international art and cross culture,
etcetera,” she said. “And what great
publicity for the theater, promoting
international artists.”
Though Chen has only been
sculpting in competition since 1999,
Schafer says she thinks lie’s been
practicing “a long time."
Port Aransas CCMS and Sand
Castle Condominium will provide
lodging for Chen during his stay,
which will probably he four or five
nights. They also provide lodging
for the other master sculptors. Lo-
cal restaurants and IGA Family Cen-
ter provide food for the competi-
tors.
Chen is 24 years old and -works
as a designer in a company in
Zhoushan City. I le also directs and
produces sand sculpture for a hotel
or parties in his home town.
The fourth annual Spring Sand
Celebration will be on the beach
April 7-9 in Port Aransas.
For more information or to vol-
unteer as a sponsor for Chen, call
Schafer at 749-2500.
