cut the ribbon last Friday morning,
officially presenting the Happy El-
ementary with new playground
equipment. Thanks to the hard work
of many community members, teach-
ers, students and administration the
playground east of the elemental}'
building now has a new multifaceted
toy for the youngsters
THE HAPPY COWBOYS faced
off with the Farwell Steers in the
Cowboy Corral last Friday night
The final score was Happy 10, Farwell
16 Patrick McCuaig had 11 tackles.
Hipohto Saenz had 8 unassisted tack-
les. 6 assists and caused 1 fumble.
Hip kicked a 26 yard field goal and
had 3 receptions for 51 yards. Tyler
Hargrave had 58 yards rushing on 12
cames. Sonny Calhoun had 5 recep-
tions for 73 yards and one touch-
down. John Mark Moudy had 2
receptions for 30 yards. Patrick
McCuaig made 11 competitions of
19 attempts for 170 yards and threw
1 touchdown.

THE HAPPY COWGIRL Cross-
Country Team traveled to Lubbock
last Saturday, Oct 1. to run in the
25th Annual Lubbock Invitational
Meet This was a meet consisting of
girls from 1A. 2A, and 3A schools.
Genie Noel, a Happy High Sopho-
more. placed 45th out of over 300
participants! Other Happy Cowgirls
running were Frcshman-Julic
Burch. Megan Simons, Jenny
Walters, Chandra Adkins and Erin
Williamson and Sophomore-Amber
Pearson This was the fourth meet
the Cowgirls have participated in.
They have two more meets upcom-
ing before the district meet in Thomp-
son Park on Oct. 25. Happy will be
hosting this meet.
THE HAPPY BAND BOOSTER
Club will sponsor a Halloween Car-
nival on Oct. 30,6-9 p m This year
it will be held in the new Happy
Community Center. Booths may be
reserved by calling Mary' Butler, at
764-3387. rental is $15. There will
be a costume contest, with one win-
ner and two runner-ups being
^awarded. There will he five age
divisions Pre-K, K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and
high school/adult. The concession
stand will be serving stew and
cornbread. nachos, sopapillas, lem-
onade and tea.
THE HAPPY HIGH SCHOOL
Band is planning a trip to Colorado
Springs to the "Cavalcade of Music,"
the first weekend in May 2000 The
band has grown to a membership of
75 students! To fund this adventure.

the Tri-State Fair in Amarillo. Mor-
gan received second with his steer.
Kendra, Megan and Colby attended
a showmanship clinic following the

COLBY GOODWIN of Loving-
ton, New Mexico was the winner of
the trailer at the 1999 Wesley Sims
Memorial Roping. Colby was the
first place winner in the steer roping.
Other placings in the steer roping
were: 2nd- C.A. Laur of Buffalo,
Okla., 3rd: Mark Freeman from
Okla., 4th: Terry Butt of Spearman,
Texas. First in the calf roping was
T. J. Good ofElida, Okla., 2nd: David

FISH WILSON OF QUITAQUE
won the barnwood bench made by
Jim Cope of Happy Treasures.
THE HAPPY RODEO Associa-
tion sold 199 raffle tickets as chances
to win a new Reyes trailer. The 200th
ticket was auctioned off during the
steer roping. This turned out to be
the winning ticket! It was jointly
owned by B.J. Dempsey, Teen
Burleson and Lewis Bostick.
THE HAPPY HIGH SCHOOL
Rodeo Club kicked off the new year
with a fund-raiser roping recently.
B.J. and Kathy Dempsey, sponsors,
organized the event. The club also
assisted with the Wesley Sims Rop-
ing. Several of the members have
participated m the Tri-State Rodeos
this fall. Tyler Hargrave in calf
roping, nbbon roping and team rop-
ing, Hope Clark, barrels and poles,
Genie Noel; barrels and Matthew
Cruse; calf roping.
PAT WILHELM AND Sandy
Price were married on Saturday, Oct.
2 at the Baptist Church m Quitaque.
They honeymooned at Lake Tahoe,
Ncv A wedding shower will be
given for them on Saturday, Oct. 17
at the Senior Citizens Building, 2:30-
4:00 p.m. The community is invited
to attend.
THE HAPPY FCE CLUB has
begun their annual pecan sales. They
are selling one pound pacjcpges at$$
per bag, halves or pieces. Orders
need to be placed by Oct. 20. Call

place an order.
THE HAPPY 4-H CLUB is sup-
porting National 4-H Week by flying
their green and white 4-Hflags along
Main Street. These flags were made
by members of the Happy 4-H sewing
project. Thank you to all of our 4-H
supporters. We appreciate you.

ist, received Honorable Mention at
theBestofthe Southwest in Amarillo
recently with one of her paintings

JACK CARTER OF Elizabeth,
Colo., has been presenting a series of
meetings at the Happy Church of
Christ this week. He is the former
editorofthe "RockyMountain Chris-
tian" newspaper and has been a
preacher for over 40 years. The final
meeting will conclude Wednesday
night at 7:30 p.m.
Emlpoyee of the Month
Michelle Diaz was chosen September
Employee of the Month because of her
hard work and dedication as a certified
nurses assistant. She came to work at
the Tulia Care Center May 17, 1995
and has done an wonderful job since
then. Michelle has 2 years experience
as a restorative aide and 2 years expe-
rience as a certified nurses assistant at
the Tulia Care Center.
Michelle enjoys working with the
residents. She says,"They make me
laugh". She also says that her co-
workers arc great people to work with.
Michelle is married and has 3 children, Marcy, 10, Mark, 7, and
Matthew 6.
Michelle enjoys spending time with her kids. She loves to read to her
children and play with them.

A LARGE CROWD attended a
"Welcome Reception" Sunday
evening honoring Father Peter Otto
at the Nazareth Community Hall.
All enjoyed hamburgers and a "Des-
sert Pot Luck." Father Pete is an
interesting person to visit with as he
has been a pastor in several area
cities, including Plainview and Lub-
bock and has recently finished 15
years as a military chaplain.
CHRISTMAS IN OCTOBER
was the theme for the Birkenfeld
reunion! Seventy of 90 descendants
ofRose Birkenfeld celebrated Christ-
mas in October along with Rose's
90th birthday at the American Le-
gion Hall in Nazareth on Sunday,
Oct. 2.
Families came from Calif., Colo.,
Okla., and Texas. The party was
hosted by JR. and Terry Birkenfeld,
their children and spouses. Every-
one enjoyed the festivities and visit-
ing with each other. The highlight of
the day was surprise presentation of
personalized quilt blocks made by
the children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren to Rose.
CHARLEY AND BEV HILL
have returned from a few days visit
with Charley's older brother Leonard
and his wife in Las Vegas.
SEVERAL NAZARETH friends
attended the funeral service for
Dolores Griffitt at the Church of
Christ in Dimmitt, Thursday morn-
ing.
MARLENE (JONES) Vandc-
grift has been here the following past
two weeks caring for her dad, Marvin
Jones. His son, Tom Jones is caring
for him now.
MANY FRIENDS AND relatives
attended the marriage celebration of
Justin Wetliington and Kandal Der-
rick, Saturday evening at the Coun-
try Home Bed and Breakfast in Can-
yon. Reception and dance followed.
BETTY AND FRANCIS
Wilhelm enjoyed a full house over
the weekend. Some of their family
came from Wichita Falls, College
Station, Denver, Amarillo, and Biyan
to attend the Texas Tech-A&M foot-
ball game Saturday

cently. He suffered a broken hip and
