Joiner says 30 feet is
p
still enough for entrance
and exit ramps.
The South Loop will
be the fourth Houston

freeway to get a bus
lane, which are used to
speed buses and van-
pools through rush-hour
traffic on Houston

freeways.
A bus lane was
opened in the middle of
the Katy Freeway from
Gessner to 610 in Octo-
ber of last year.
*
Another one was
opened in the middle of
the North Freeway from
Shepherd to downtown
-
in November of last
year.
*
Another one is under
construction on the Gulf
Freeway from Choate
Road to downtown.
Other bus lanes are
being planned for the
Southwest Freeway and
U.S. Highway 290,
Christie says.
Christie says that
eventually the entire
Loop 610 around the city
will have a bus lane.
He says the stretch of
the loop from South Post
Oak to 288 was chosen
for the first phase be-
cause of rapidly increas-
ing traffic on that
stretch, which serves
the Texas Medical
Center area.
Christie says traffic on
the South Loop has been
increasing at the rate of
five to 10 percent per
year in recent years.
He says a traffic count
done on the South Loop
in 1983 showed that
152,000 to 155,000
vehicles go over the
stretch in an average
24-hour period.
“This will continue to
increase five to 10 per-
cent per year in the
** ______
future,” Christie says.
Christie says that
there has been no op-
position to the project so
far.
The South Loop
borders three near
southwest Houston sub-
divisions — Westridge,
Woodshire and Wood-
side.
Christie says the high-
way department plans to
keen four lanes open on
each side of the freeway
during the construction,
the SaHiC iiuiTibci of
lanes currently open.
However, Christie
says, the lanes will be
detoured and reduced in
width from 12 feet to
either 11 feet or 10'/i
feet.
“There's no doubt
there’s going to be some
slowdown of traffic,"
Christie says.
Joiner says tht: slow-
down will probably only
be “a couple of minutes
