SGA: resign or do your job ggp Modem Angst:
, Just "chunnelingalong..."
The studcntbodyofTcxas Wesleyan
University should be displeased with the ac-
tions of a minority of the Student Govern-
ment Association. They should be displeased
with some of the members of the SGA be-
cause some of the members have failed to
attend three or more of last semesters’ seven
scheduled meetings of the SGA.
Those members arc: Lora Head, a
Science and Humanities Representative ab-
sent Sept. 21,Oct. 18,and Nov. 15;Stcphanic
McLaughlin, an Education Representative
absent Sept. 6, Oct. 4, Oct. 18, and Nov. 15;
and Steve Marx, a Science and Humanities
Representative absent Sept. 21, Nov. 1, Nov.
15, and Dee. 6.
The members who have not regu-
larly attended meetings will have reasonable
excuses of why they did not attend, but,
whether they had a reasonable excuse or not,
those membersof the SGA who did not attend
the meetings are not representing the inter-
ests of those who elected them. The SGA
thrives on the exchange of ideas, and the
group suffers a lack of input when members
arc absent.
As the members of the SGA who
have missed several of the meetings seem to
have other concerns that conflict with the
responsibilities of their elected position, they
should resign from theirposition on the SGA,
or should change their schedule, lifestyle, or
affiliation with their other groups so as to
devote the required lime to the position to
which they were elected.
The members mentioned above
freely sought theirposition in the public eye
and cannot contend that this editorial which
brings to light their actions that arc directly
related to theirclcctcd positions arc an “inva-
sion of their privacy” when they sought the
publics’ notice.
By their own choice they occupy a
position that has both public recognition and
inherent responsibilities.
Letters to the Editor
Dear Mr. Todd,
[RE: the “de-hiring" of Derek Dexheimer]
Having observed the internal workings of institutions of higher learning from various vantage
points for the past 40 years, I have come to consider inconsequential any student newspaper
editor who has not incurred the wrath of his institution’s president
and/or at least two elements of its constituluency.
by Warren Magnus
Welcome back from the holidays,
guys (Wait, that’s sexist. How about people?).
We’re still in the Middle East, Bawcom is
gone, and some of your favorite faculty mem-
bers no longer walk these hallowed
(well...maybe not hallowed) halls.
The budget crisis is deepening. The
interim president has ordered a freeze on all
new spending and across the board 10% cut in
all budgets for the next fiscal year. Several
departments are already strapped and strug-
gling to cover their financial commitments.
In light of this, it does seem more
than just a touch frivolous to be punching
holes in buildings to allow more convenient
access to the bookstore. The bookstore has
been where it now is for the last ten years and
for all of those years, the only entrance that
students could use was on the front of the
building inconveniently away from every-
thing else.
Now, the University’s general fund
is being tapped to cut this new and oh so
convenient door through the game room to
the bookstore.
Perhaps itwould have been of greater
wisdom to, if this would promote the busi-
ness of the bookstore, allow the company
holding the franchise to pay the costs of
cutting the door if such a door was an absolute
On that basis I heartily congratulate Derek Dexheimer, whom I
already knew to be far and away one of Texas Wesleyan's most
notable scholars and promising writers. The man has scored a grand
slam in his one semester as managing editor of the RAMBLER.
I envy Dexheimer, never having achieved such success myself;
nevertheless 1 wish him well and nominate him to receive the RAM’S
HORN dedication this year.
Sincerely,
Dr. Margaret Patoski

necessity.
I for one only make one trip per
semester to the bookstore, at the beginning to
purchase my textbooks. Once, the end of the
semester even heralded a second trip to the
entrepreneurial center of scholastic supplies
to purchase a blue book to enable my taking
of finals.
Presumably, it is not a daily trek for
most students. Few I should think must tra-
verse the wilds of the dorm area of the cam-
pus on a daily basis to purchase a replace-
ment for the pen they left at home.
Why then is this door a necessity
that required the spending of Wesleyan funds
in an already tight year?
And what’s more, what’s next? Is
this obsession with convenience that brought
us the ATM and now wormholes through
buildings going to bring us to the next logical
step? An on campus 7-11.
Now that’s a thought, we already
have a spot for it. The place where Ann
Waggoner stands could be the campus con-
venience store. No, even better, a campus
with it’s very own Sunglass Hut and Orange
Julius. Maybe a video arcade, or a pet shop or
record store. Maybe we could even convert
that lawn in front of the library into the Texas
Wesleyan Miniature Golf Course all at the
University’s expense.
Hmmm...Now there’s an idea.
