Singing Cadets Tour Europe ^ q\a/i yuir a D

From page one
The Cadets will have a full agenda
on their tour. Among the many events
planned, the Cadets will have the
opportunity to meet with the Arch
Bishop when they give two concerts
for the Catholic Church. They have a
lot of receptions planned to meet the
mayors of the cities they visit.
Judah is excited about a dinner they
will have on a boat on the Rhine River.
The Cadets will sing with the U.S. Air
Force military band in Robalban,
Germany. They will also sing with a
children’s choir in Seigelbach. The
Cadets are very happy to get this large
amount of exposure performing with
various groups around the world.
In addition to planning the agenda
and finding host homes, the Cadets
have been working on fund-raisers all
year to finance the trip. “We have
raised all the money for the trip. Past
members of the Singing Cadets and the
A & M alumni have helped us a lot to
raise the money," said Judah. Each
Cadet will pay a minimal amount to go
on the tour, but not nearly the actual
cost u> go.
Thirteen guests will accompany the
Cadets in Europe. The Cadets had a
drawing to let two of their guests go for
free. Judah said one of the member has
invited his grandmother to go on the
trip. She speaks both German and
Hungarian ans should be helpful as the
Cadets travel through these countries.
Judah, who is a finance major, said
the Singing Cadets if a voluntary or-
ganization, and the members do not get
any type of course credit for their par-
ticipation. “It is very time consuming.
We practice every day from 5 to 6 p.m.
I enjoy it and it is a great chance to meet
all kinds of people from all over. I will
miss it when I graduate,” said Judah. A
& M is just now beginning a music
program, but the Singing Cadets will
remain a separate organization from
the music program.
At the beginning of each semester,
the Cadets have auditions for new
members. There is a vocal audition and
an interview. More than 60 members
are selected. “You have to be able to
sing. Director Boone likes someone
who has potential. We need a lot of
different sounds. There is also an inter-
view in front of eight to ten members
so we can find out more about them,”
said Judah.
“This is a very time consuming
organization. We stress that grades arc
most important. We arc here to get an
education. Members must concentrate
on their studies," said Judah. He said
quite a few members stay in the Cadets
for all four years of college as he did.
The Singing Cadets have traveled
10,346 miles, given 170 concerts and
visited 51 Texas cities during the past
three years. The Cadets performed
before President George Bush at the
Texas A &M University commence-
ment in May 1989.
The Singing Cadets are scheduled
to return to Houston on June 1. Judah
said that he and several other members
plan to stay in Europe until July 1 to
tour the area.

Elizabeth Coon, Bellaire High School ninth grader, participated in the
I Texas State Science and Engineering Fair in Austin recently. She won first
1 place in the Regional fair in the Astioarcna in March to qualify for state. She
I was the only HISD student to qualify to participate in the state competition.
I Her project was "Why is Houston Cracking Up?” Elizabeth and her project
I were well received at both Regional and State. She plans to continue this
I project and enter again next year. The slate winners are usually seniors who
I have worked on a project for four or five years.
Elizabeth was accompanied to Austin by Mrs. Eleanor Smith, Bellaire

Herod Elementary
Celebrates
Silver Anniversary
Gary L. Herod Elementary School, lo-
cated in southwest Houston, will be cele-
brating its Silver Anniversary. The festivi-
ties will be held on Tuesday, May 22, be-
ginning at 7:30 p.m. All alumnis, past
teachers, and PTO presidents are encour-
aged to attend. There will be refreshments
and a program performed by some of our
students. Mrs. Gary L. Herod from Dallas
will be the Honored Guest on hand to help
celebrate Herod’s 25th anniversary.
The school was named for a man who, on
March 15,1961, in Houston, sacrificed his
life for the safety of others. On a flight at
night, in bad weather, the engine of his jet
aircraft failed and he was unable to restart.
While descending, he turned away from the
city. Coming out of the overcast, he was
still over a densely populated area. Captain
Herod could have safely ejected himself at
this time from the disabled aircraft, but
chose to stay and to guide it into a small
unpopulated area. He did success in maneu-
vering his aircraft into the clear area, en-
circled by the Maplewood and Mcyerland
Subdivisions, but by this time he was too
low for his parachute to save his life.
The school, which has doubled its popu-
lation in the last five years, is proud to
represent such a heroic and courageous role
model. We hope that all who have been
affiliated with Herod Elementary School
since 1965 will come and make this cele-
bration truly memorable. Mark your calen
dars NOW for Tuesday, May 22 at 7:30
p.m. at Herod - 5627 Jason.
