Kite fun
March winds and the Port
Aransas beach combine to
make kite flying lots of fun.
These Winter Texans were
flying a multi-colored multi-kite
on Monday, March 19, when
the tails got tangled and it
came down. Here, they
untangle the tails and get
ready to launch it again.

Pier House gives new life to pier
My companions and I enjoyed our
dinner the other evening sur-
rounded by tropical plants, surf
boards, palm trees that had pink
bubbling trunks and chili pepper
lights. The unique decor inside was
matched outside by the best view in
Port Aransas. Hang 10, surfs up, the
fishing is great and we were hun-
gry! We were at the Pier House res-
taurant on Horace Caldwell Pier.
The new owners of this island-
style eatery are Mary Goldsmith and
Ron Faulkner and they have com-
pletely revamped the place. It’s spar-
kling clean kitchen and center din-
ing area have been freshly painted
in aqua, teal and ocean blue colors.
They have nice blue tables with
white patio chairs and overhead are
big blue open beams with ceiling fans
and warm cedar wood planking.
There are framed surfing pictures
to look at and a huge colorful 12-
foot long surfboard that belongs to
Mary. The pleasant casual atmo-
sphere inside has a refreshing new
look an'd they serve food from 6 a.m.
until 9 p.m. daily.
Diana Peterson is the manager and
her friendly staff includes Jimmie
Lou, their breakfast cook and Kevin,
their lunch and dinner cook.
Michele, Chris, Brooks and Lauren
will take your order at the counter
and deliver your meal when it’s
ready. The menu is posted on a hig
chalkboard over the counter and
begins with breakfast items. Listed
are pancakes, classic bacon or sau-
sage with eggs and hash browns,
breakfast tacos for $1.95, sausage or
bacon and egg biscuits, omelets with
hash browns, and cinnamon rolls,
fruit Danish and cheese Danish. On

weekends they feature yummy eggs
benedict for $5.95.
We arrived just as the sun went
down and before we went inside we
paused for a few minutes to enjoy
the view. You
can see the south
jetty and ships
passing by to the
north, miles of
beach and gulf
shore activities
to the south,
surfers, swim-
mers, and fisher-
man are east,
and west is a
panoramic view
of Port Aransas.
If you walk to
the end of the
pier the view is
spectacular, especially at sunrise or
sunset.
Breakfast is served until 11 a.m.,
but you can order the rest of their
menu anytime. 1 had one of the
shrimp wraps with breaded popcorn
shrimp, shredded lettuce and fresh
pico de gallo. One of my compan-
ions had her favorite, the beef fajita
taco, priced at $2.25 and a grilled
chicken fajita taco. And my other
companion had the fried shrimp and
curly-q fries basket for $6.95. We also
tried their crispy onion rings and a
new item, the spicy twisted chicken
that is shaped like a pretzel. It came
with a Caesar dipping sauce and was
great!
Other items on their menu are
juicy cheesehurgers in a basket for
$3.75, grilled chicken breast sand-
wiches, fish sandwiches, spicy surfer
wings, and fried or grilled chicken

breast wraps. They offer daily lunch
specials and some of the delicious
homemade soups they prepare from
scratch are navy bean, vegetable beef
and chicken noodle. To quench your
thirst after spending time fishing or
shelling, they have fountain drinks,
hot chocolate and coffee, canned soft
drinks, orange juice, Powerade and
bottled waters.
The Pier House also offers bags
of ice, chips, candy, snacks, drinks
and food to go.
Located on the beach at the end
of Beach Street, Horace Caldwell
Pier in it’s present form, has been
here since it was rebuilt and dedi-
cated in 1983. Originally the pier
was made of wood and extended out
into the Gulf further than the south
jetty (which extends 3,700 from the
beach). Hurricanes Beulah and Carla
shortened it and the storm surge
from hurricane Allen destroyed the
rest. It’s now 1,245 feet long and
made of concrete blocks that can be
removed mechanically or by storm
surges.
This coming weekend would be a
good time to check out the new Pier
House. The Pier Masters Surf Se-
ries surfing competition is Saturday
at 8 a.m. Enjoy your meal!

As a kid growing up, I always
wondered where my life would take
me. Never did I ever guess I would
be pastoring a church here in Port
Aransas. One thing I know is that
God does things for a reason. I am
here for a purpose. I have been
coming to the island for about seven
years now, and one thing I have
realized is how different people are
here. The beach seems to attract
people that are not afraid of any-
thing and like to live on the edge.
Funny, I read the same about Jesus.
A man who was not afraid of anyone
or anything. A man who walked
right on the edge where no man had
dared to go. A man who cared and
ministered to people that churches
would not even let in their front
door. He saw the worth of people
and gave them direction so they
would become people of purpose.
In that same regard we all have
gifts and abilities that God has given
to us for a purpose. A purpose not
to be kept to ourselves. He desires to
show us that He -
is an exciting
God, one that
only wants to
shape us into the
people of pur-
pose He has cre-
ated us to be. I
know that God
has placed all of
us here for a rea-
son. I was once a
nobody, and
God made me
into a somebody
with purpose for
Him.
