“When ye received the word

With the political lid officially
pried off at Chicago the country
now enters on a four month cam-
paign of stump and radio
speeches that will extend into
every corner of every state in
the Union. With radio adding
! to the ballyhoo it will be four
months of ear-splitting activi-
ty with the public wishing, be-
fore it has hardly gotten into
full swing, that presidential elec
tions were fewer and farther be-
tween. Bowie citizens who still
take their politics seriously will
be in hot water from now on if
they attempt to run down and
verify the truthfulness of every
report that reaches their ears.
Others, who know that political
spellbinders can easily cast their
conscience aside if they think it
will win a vote or two, will per
mit these rumors to go right in
one ear and out the other, and
they’ll not lose a minute’s sleep
over them. But everyone, re
gardlessof whether they take
the ballyhoo seriously or not,
will do well to remember that
little is to be gained by hothead-
ed political argument, and there
is much to be lost The country
will run along on a fairly even
keel, no matter who is elected
But you can’t win back the
friendship of' neighbors lost
through hot-headed political
argument.
Do your own thinking and
your own voting add leave the
argument to the other fellow.
Then you will have less cause for
regret in the event your condi
date happens to lose. But don’t
get the idea the country is going
to the dogs the day after election
if "the other side'1 wins. It
all our troubles disappear the
moment the result is announced.
So don’t get “h.e.t up” during the
coming four months. Keep
your head and you’ll keep your
friends.

word of God, which effectually

was the golden text from I Thes
salonians 2:13.
The lesson sermon included
the following prtssages from the
Bible (Isaiah 29:18.19): “And in
that day shall the deaf hear the
words of the book, and the eyes
of the blind shall see out of
darkness. The meek also shall
increase their joy in the Lord,
and the poor among men shall
rejoice in the Holy One of
Israel.”
The service also embraced
citations from the Christian
Science textbook, “Science and
Health with Key to the Scrip
tures;” by Mary Baker Eddy,
among them being the following
from preface p vii:”
“The time for thinkers has
come. Truth, independent of
doctrines and time honored sys
terns, knocks at the portals of
humanity.”

RAIL TRANSPORTATION
IS EFFICIENT AND
ECONOMICAL
• THE RAILROAD is the most efficient and the mogt
economical transportation agency the human mind has
ever devised.
The ability of commercial trucks to operate with .vari-
ous charges for their services has been because they are
not required to carry all kinds and classes of freight.
The truck can choose its freight and is privileged to re-
ject that which it cannot handle, either because it is not
equipped for such heavy service or the rates are too low
to be profitable. The railroad CANNOT DISCRIMI-
NATE but must accept all freight offered it.
In 1930 the shippers of Texas paid the railroads
$225-223,142 in freight charges. If the same volume and
character of traffic had been carried by trucks it would
have cost the shippers, according to the best available
data on trucking costs, $900,000,000, or four times as
much.
What will be the effect on the shippers of Texas if only
the traffic which the trucks cannot handle is left to the
railroads? If traffic paying the higher rate is taken
from the railroads by the trucks, it will be necessary for
the rail carriers to increase their rates on the low grade
traffic or go out of business. The total transportation bill
will be greatly increased.
The railroad rate structure is a composite designed
for the purpose of enabling the free movement of ALL
ARTICLES OF COMMERCE, making it possible to bring
even the cheapest commodities into general use and dis-
tribution. Were it not for the low rates made available
by the railroads on many low grade commodities and raw
materials, their distribution and use would be impossible
and all commerce and industry would be seriously af-
fected. >
• THE RAILROADS CANNOT SUBSIST ON LOW
GRADE TRAFFIC ALONE.

There have been times when
conditions were more favorable
for celebrating- the Fourth of
July, but there was never a time
when there was a greater need
for displaying loyalty. If there
has ever aeen a moment when
this country stood in need of a
new pledge of loyalty, that time
is now.
It has been rough going for
the past couple of years, and the
end of the road is not yet in
sight. True the going is getting
smoother in some sections. But
no one enn predict how many
bumps are in the road on ahead.
Every section must take them as
they come, and keep on strug
gling io get over them in the
quickest and most satisfactory
manner. The best and sureest
way to overcome nrtional prob-
lems, aod to settle them per-
mantly, is to openly display
Sour loyalty to your country.
The patriotism of citizens of
Bowie and surrounding territory
has never been questioned, and
it is not going to be now that
conditions are not as bright as
we would like to see them. Our
citizens are not going to let up in
their fight for a return to pros-
perity. They are not going to
listen to those who take advan-
tage of such conditions to preach
disloyalty—they are going to
stick to America throngh thick
and thin and they are going to
win out. The natien needs your
new pledge r of loyalty this
t^^burtk of July more than it has
needed it in the past. It expects
even greater co operation from
every citizen. This Is the time
to show where you stand. Hang
out the flag. Fire a few volleys
from the old shotgun if you
haven’t any fireworks handy.
Give three cheers for your
country, and resolve in your
heart that ss a Good American
you are going to help the world
to get back on its feet. That’s
the proper way to celebrate this
Fourth of July.
