BILLS PAID BY CHECK
ARE SELDOM DISPUTED
Then* is a reason. The check you issue in payment, the
stub to correspond, snd the books ol the bank, together
with the payee's endorsement is a strong chain of evidence
to contradict. The cheek itself, it a receipt and is return-
ed to you by the bank. Better have a checking account
and pay hills but once.

Captain F. Pavell, a merchant and
postmaster of 9hellbank, La., ten
miles from Orange on Rabine river,
has klHed one of the largest alliga-
tors ever seen in this country,
A large watch dog kept on Cap-
tain Pavell’s premises kept the family
awake all Tuesday night with Its
barking and it was believed that an
effort was being made by some one
to steal something from the store
Next morning to the surprise of the
veteran merchant, he found that the
faithful canine had been barking -at
a real man-eating alligator, which he
had discovered near the bank of the
river a short distance from the store
Captain Pavell ventured cloae enough
to the big saurian to take a shot at
him, which proved effective and after
an exciting fight with the daxed ani-
mal, Captain Pavell came out vic-
torious and proceeded to skin him.
The alligator hide measures 12 feet In
length and it required the strength of
three men to move hint from the spot
where he was killed.
Captain Pavell stated that alligator
made every effort possible to catch
the dog and his object for coming near
the premises was evidently for the
purpose of getting something to eat.
