Hi

•!
The dispatches tell us that already Bisbee is
arising like magic from the ashes. We knew
that a great many Texans had settled there.—
Alpine Avalanche.
And yet the Avalanche would withdraw its
allegiance to the Lone Star flag, and abjure the
proud name of Texan, just for a mess of pottage
and what novelty there would be to the tran-
saction. Care you nothing for that priceless
heritage of our fathers, bought with blood at
the Alamo and at San Jacinto? That Star of
Liberty and that wreath of honor that time can-
not dim nor ages wither, will you cast them
a»ay as things of no consequence? We trust
J not.—El Dorado Times.
O, Rats Come down out of the clouds to
hollering distance.
If your town was divided into four wards,
wouldn’t you still be a citizen of the same town ?
What’s in a name, and why should we cling
to ancient political boundary lines for the sake
of a sickly sentiment? We*want laws to fit
West Texas—and, by the wav, that’s a good
name for our new state. We want strong, virile,
liberal, broad-gauged, turn-West-Texas-loose
legislation. We want laws under which we may
be permitted to develop our natural resources.
What carried those Texans to Bisbee, and
scattered them by thousands all over Mexico,
, New Mexico and Arizona!
Fool legislation in their own state.
Deny it who can.—Alpine Avalanche.
While we do not agree at all with Easterling
in his desire to see Texas divided into foui-
states, we will have to admit that he is cor-
rect in the statement that foolish legislation in
Texas has driven much of her capital from tin*
state.
We are constrained to believe, though, that
the thirtieth legislature reached the limit
along that line and that future sessions of the
law making body will result in saner and
safer laws being passed.
The people administered a mighty re-
buke to the present administration in the pri
maries last summer, and the handwriting has
been plainly seen on the wall that legislation in-
imical to the best interests of the state will no
* longer be tolerated.
WThat we want is just as few laws as neces-
sary, and these laws favorable to the develop-
ment of the tremendous resources of the state,
north, east, south and west.
that is to be one of the largest, if not the largest,
in the South. They should further take note
that while Port Arthur and John W. don't give
a whoop what is said about them, they do want
that business college treated nicely—especially
as there is going to be a very extensive advertis-
ing campaign in its behalf. So be good, chil-
dren.—Port Arthur News.
While the newspapers occasionally poke a lit-
tle fnn at Port Arthur and John W. Oates, they
all realize that he iR a powerful factor in Die
upbuilding of that city and in the advancement
of Southeast Texas. We are all proud, that
John W. Gates is a citizen of .Southeast Texas,
and whatever he may do for his home city of
Port Arthur, the beneficial results thereof will
radiate through all the surrounding country.
We would like to see a score more just like John
W. Oates, come to Southeast Texas and expend
their means as freely as he does in building up
this section of the state. As to the Port Arthur
Business College, it is bound to be a good thing.
Orange is just opening one on a somewhat small-
er scale, but one that will prove to be a great
benefit to the town. And it was through a pro-
gressive citizen of Orange that this school was
secured, a man who was not afraid to go down
in his pockets and dig up to help along a wor-
thy institution. By a peouliar co-incidence, we
might add, his initials are J. W., also.

Editor Seely of the Atlanta Georgian has re-
ceived anonymous letters threatening him with
death if he jrersisted in writing editorials about
the drunken sot who* occupies the position of
mayor of that city and who is the nominee for
reelection. Anonymous letters are always the
wenix)ns of cowards and assassins, and Editor
Seely, publishing a fac simile of one of those
letters received bv him, offers a reward of five
hundred dollars for the arrest and conviction
of the party guilty of writing the letter. The
Georgian is making a strong fight for a clean
administration and its body blows are evidently
lx»ing felt by the drunken mayor and his co-
horts. The best people of Atlanta, however,
are lined up with the Georgian, and all of the
South will watch with interest the outcome of
this efftirt of that city to rid itself of such a blot
on its fair name as the present mayor. ,

BEE
TO DEFEAT CANNON.
The Allen town (Pa.) Call, noting the fait that
there is an evident desire, both in Republican
and Democratic rank? to defeat Joe Cannon for
the speakership of the next house of represen
tatives, suggests a very plausible plan by which
this much desired result can be effected.
The Call suggests that the Democrats, of
course, have no hope of eleteing a Democrat
as speaker of the House.
This being a fact, It further suggests that if
the Democrats would line up with these Repub-
licans who are opposed to Cannon and vote for
a good man in the Republican ranks V spea V
er they could easily accomplish the downfall
of the autocratic speaker, who has shaped Icgi t
lation in the past according to his own will.
It might Ik* suggested that if the anti-Cannon
Republicans would vote with the Democrats, a
Democrat might be elected speaker.
Tliis could possibly lx* cffectedr hut it would
be manifestly unfair.
The Republicans have the majority in con-
i and they are entitled to the speakership—
and they will have it, even though they have t<
llow Unde Joe Cannon for another term,
file suggestion of the Call strikes ns as being
one and we would like to see it adopted,
is no question but that much beneficial

“(), would some power the habit hand ns to
trade where advertisers land us; Both sense and
pocketbook command us—we hope our readers
understand us,” sings the Alpine Avalanche.
If there was a detective on Bill Easterling’s
trail and he should happen to read that para-
graph, he would take the first train for Alpine.
—Orange Leader.
Gee, don’t put ’em on the trail, Art’, and
here’s another stagger for you:
“November’s winds gre chill and drear, No-
vember’s leaf is red and sere;” Thanksgiving
Day will soon be here. Our advertisers make it
clear where all may get Thanksgiving cheer;
So read the advertisements, dear.
It’s your move, Sylvester.—Alpine Ava-
lanche.
Having reproduced the above spasm in our
columns, we should think it would be up to the
merchants of Orange now to get busy with their
Thanksgiving advertising and let the people
know, through the columns of the Leader, jnst
where the best things to eat and wear for that
holiday occasion could be found.
We await your move, Sylvester

On account of the railroad having to give a
week’s notice to the Interstate Commerce Com-
mission of the rate made for moving the United
States Carnival attractions, the carnival at Or-
ange has been postponed one week and will be
put on here November 23 to 28. This will give
the merchants of Orange another week in which
to advertise among the [x*ople of Orange and
surrounding counties and interest them in com-
ing to Orange next week.

A man from Houston, discovering that a ne-
gro was a passenger on the same first-class Pull-

produced a big six shooter and made Mr. Ne
gro “light a shuck.” The negro was riding on
government transportation, which calls for the
test service of the roads, hut even government
transportation is not sufficient to permit ne-
groes to ride in Pullman sleepers with white

to attract everybody. In a notice sent out they
my that among the attractions will be the race
meet conducted by the racing asociation, the
poultry and pet stock show, the Methodist An-

the carnival. That’s a pretty good bill, all
right, and everybody ought to be satisfied.
