Teds About
Early Masonry
In Medina Co.
(Continued From Last Week)
With its abandonment by the
lodire. the building fell into
disuse, was left to decay and the
spot once the scene, of so much
social activity among the sturdy
pioneers is now marked by only
a few scattered stones.
> & t-
Fletcher Davis points to th*
ruins of one corner of the old
Masonic hall.
More enduring, however, than
the habitation of life and activity
is the nearly bivouac of the com-
munity’s dead. A small plot of
ground alongside .the, puldic roa.d
and known as the Masonic grave
yard, still has the markings of a
number of graves; now for the
mix' part m u -an state >d uban-
d< ned neglect. Two stones still
stand. On one the inscription is.
almo t illegible from the ravages
of time. The other,, partially re-
stored some yeaFs ago when
Hondo City Lodge No.. 756 gave
jihe grounds a gleaning up and
fenced them, contains thfr -follow-
ing inscription: '•

th(e junior warden wl^o.waj killed
by Indiana.
What a sad reminder of the
dangers our pioneer predecessors
braved and the courage and
fortitude they must have posses-
sed!
A feature of both markers that"
strikes one’s attention is Hurt the
Masonic emblem at the top of
the stones is in reverse of wha!
we regularly observe. As carved,
the square is at the top and the
compass at the bottom with both
points of the compass on top of
the square. Did the sculptor have
a purpose and what was it?
