ST. PHILIP’S COLLEGE MISSION
St. Philip’s College, founded in 1898, is a comprehensive,
public community college whose mission is to provide a quality
educational environment which stimulates leadership, personal
growth, and a lifelong appreciation for learning.
A.s a Historically Black College, and as a Hispanic Serving
Institution, St. Philip’s College strives to be an important force in
the community, responsive to the needs of a population rich in its
ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity. St. Philip’s College

free of charge. Publication deadlines are posted and
will be strictly adhered to. Submissions from students,
faculty, and staff are encouraged and should be typed
(students should include Social Security number) and

the Office of Student Life. Advertisements may also be

Decathlon Volunteers Sought
Volunteers are needed for the Texas Academic Decathlon
State Finals, which will be hosted by San Antonio College on
February 23-24. Volunteer schedule is as follows:
Friday, February 23: San Antonio College, 2:00-8:15 p.m.
(dinner provided). Speech or interview judges needed.
Saturday, February 24: Omni San Antonio, 8:00 a.m. to
3:15 p.m. (lunch provided). Testing monitors needed.

Student Essay Contest
$1,000 to the Essay Contest Winner plus

The Community College Baccalaureate Association (CCBA) is sponsoring the 4» Annual Essay Contest to
determine what studesits think about community coBeges offering baccalaureate (four year) college degrees on
their campuses. Some colleges do this in partnership with vniversifies, some offer distance learning programs
and some confer the baccalaureate degrees themselves.
Awards
* $1,000 and an all-expense paid trip to the 7th Annual Community College Baccalaureate Association
Conference, Frontiers of Access, in New Orleans from March 2 - 4,2007 will be awarded to the winner.
* $1,000 will.also be awarded to the Student Government Association of the winner's college.
Essay Rules
All essays must comply with the following contest rules:
* Contestant must be currently enrolled in a community college (at any worldwide institution).
♦ Each contestant may submit only one essay.
• No literary form other than an assay win be accepted for judging.
• Essay must be typed using 12-ooint type in English.
• The essay text is limited to a maximum of 500 words and a minimum of 400.
• Essay must reflect the contestant's own research, writing and original thinking.
• Essay must have the following at the top of the first page submitted:
o Essay title
o Author's name, address, telephone number and email address,
o''Community college name, address, telephone number.
* Additional essay pages must have the author's name typed at the top right hand comer.
* Entries must be postmarked by February 1,2007 or emailed by midnight to Dr. Beth Hagan. Community
