YARBOROUGH SPOKE HERE
A battle single-handed as Assist-
ant Attorney General against 30
lawyers and lobbyists whereby he
won $10,000,000 a year for the peo-
ple of Texas was described in a
speech here Saturday, July 9, by 35
year old District Judge Ralph Yar-
borough of Austin, candidate for At-
torney General.
Yarborough pointed out that pipe-
lines had been paying for only 98
per cent of the oil taken but, as a
result of the fight he launched, they
now pay for 100 per cent. This is of
great importance to the Permanent
School Fund and the Permanent Un-
iversity Fund because of the Large
income they receive.

County was apportioned $714,210.96
for road construction which consists
of 153 miles of road improvement.
We will be able to use the same if
we can provide the sponsor’s part.
We have secured some $200,000.00
WPA funds allocated as follows:
Sewing Rooms, Canning Clubs,
Teachers’ Projects, Homemaking
projects, a Nursing Project, and
Surplus Commodity. Many of our
widows with children to support
can be cared for under these pro-
jects with very little cost to the
county. I would like to say that
Fannin County has secured every
cent as much WPA money as any
county in Texas, based upon the
funds at our disposal. I have co-
operated to the the fullest with
WPA.
I have worked tirelessly with the
old people of this county in helping
them to present their claims to the
Texas Old Age Assistance Commis-
sion in such a way that they might
secure aid. I have written hundreds
of letters in their interest, and I be-
lieve that I have been able to ac-
complish good results in their be-
half. I believe in a liberal pension
for the old people and have done my
utmost to help them.
In conclusion I will say that I
have three opponents, all lawyers,
who want to be your next County
Judge, two of whom now hold coun-
ty offices. One of my opponents
made it necessary for me to make a
campaign on my second term with-
out cause. Do you give him credit
or discredit for tht same? I can
give you better service than any of
my opponents as the office is your
most important office and exper-
ience at this time is of great value.
Do you want to go backward or
forward? If considered from the
standpoint of need, I am sure I shall
still be first.
If. a County Judge performs only
the duties prescribed by law he has
an office of leisure, but if he per-
forms all those duties as implied by
law his office is indeed a workshop.
For that reason I have been unable
to see many of you and I wish to
use this as a personal request for
your vote and influence in the com-
ing primary election on July 23,
1938. I thank you.
Very truly yours,
J. E. Spies, County Judge, Fannin
County, Texas. (Pol. adv.)
