Bastrop Education Foundation’s Prize Patrol hands out grant awards
BY ERIN GREEN

“Whoo-hoo! It’s the prize
patrol! It’s the prize patrol!”
Amid shouts of excitement
and encouragement, the ring-
ing of a cow bell and accom-
panied by a chorus of whistles
from simple, streamer-laden
party favors, members of the
Bastrop Education Foundation
could be found roaming the
hallways of the Bastrop school
district’s campuses Friday.
Led by BEF President Ter-
ry Moore, along with many of
the members of the foundation
as well as district administra-
tion, the group spent much of
the day traveling the district
and surprising the winners of
the foundation’s 2013-14 Inno-
vative Teaching Grants.
She said the day is always
a lot of fun and noted this
year’s Prize Patrol day was no
different.
“Prize Patrol is a fun day,”
Moore said. “The Bastrop Ed-
ucation Foundation has the
awesome opportunity to visit
the schools in the district, cre-
ating a lot of noise in the hall-

Seidel’s
the one
BY ERIN GREEN

Easter weekend was a
long one for 7-year-old Bella
Simpson.
The girl, along with her
grandparents, Jerry and
Nancy Simpson, had a big
secret to keep.
The littlest Simpson in
the family had nominated her
first-grade teacher at Mina
Elementary School — Di-
ane Seidel, who once taught
music to Bella’s father, Eric
Simpson— in the KASE 101
radio station’s Teacher of the
Month contest.
Best of all, Bella’s entry
paid off. Seidel was named
the country station’s Teacher
of the Month for April.
When asked why she
wanted to nominate her
teacher for the award, Bella
simply answered, “Because I
really wanted her to win.”

BY SARAH ACOSTA

A straight shot to Aus-
tin Bergstrom Interna-
tional Airport, Texas 71
is one of Austin’s - and its
surrounding areas - most
important arteries.
This vital corridor pro-
vides commuters from
Bastrop County a direct
route to US 183 and US
290, and the Texas De-
partment of Transporta-
tion has plans to toll a por-
tion of this state highway
within the next year and
half.
According to officials,
the new project, funded
in large part by the Texas
130 tollway, will allevi-
ate congestion and im-
prove safety along Texas
71 near Austin Bergstrom
International Airport.
The project will consist
of adding an additional
lane in both directions and
managed lanes to bypass
traffic lights. There will
be tolled express lanes
from Spirit of Texas and
Presidential Boulevard to
just east of Texas 130, as
well as the reconstruction
and realignment of the
FM 973 intersections at
