BISD names new athletic coordinator
Willoughby to oversee
Cedar Creek, Bastrop
High School programs.

The Bastrop School District
has named Mark Willoughby
as its newest district coordi-
nator of athletics.
The position, which has
been vacant for a number of
years, will oversee both Ce-
dar Creek and Bastrop high
schools’ athletic programs
and feeder schools.
Willoughby is a veteran of
the Bastrop School District.
Most recently the texting co-
ordinator and assistant prin-
cipal at Bastrop High School,
he previously served the dis-
trict as an English teacher,
head baseball coach, football
defensive coordinator and
head football coach.
“I am excited at the oppor-
tunity to lead the athletic pro-
grams, coaches and student
athletes at both feeder pro-
grams to new levels of suc-
cess,” Willoughby said.
For the school district, the
decision to revive the position
had much to do with the man
they had to fill it.
“Mr. Willoughby has served
the district for several years
as both a coach and an ad-
ministrator,” Superintendent
Steve Murray said in a pre-
pared statement. “This com-
bination of experience is what
is needed as we look to him
and the campus coordinators
to work with our district’s
boys and girls athletic pro-
grams to move forward and

excel.”
Willoughby’s agenda in-
cludes not only improving the
on-the-field product for Bas-
trop and Cedar Creek athlet-
ics, but coordinating involve-
ment from students, the dis-
trict and community stake-
holders in an attempt to
strengthen the bond between
the athletic programs and
communities in both Bastrop
and Cedar Creek. He will al-
so hold student-athletes to a
high standard as representa-
tives of the program and com-
munity.
“It is my belief that being a
student athlete and a coach at
BISD is an honor that comes
with an expectation and re-
sponsibility to represent the
campus, district and commu-
nity in a first-class manner
both on the field and in the
classroom,” he said.

PRESEASON FOOTBALL COUNTDOWN
Tribe ready to reload in 2013
Five senior leaders are
gone, but returning
players show promise.

Editor’s Note: This is part
three of a four-part, way-too-
early football preview series
counting down to the start of
high school conditioning and
practice on Aug. 12 (Aug. 5for
Smithville and Tribe Consoli-
dated). Each issue, we’ll break
down one school from our cov-
erage area. Up next: Smithville.
Last Season: The Warriors
went all the way to the TCAL
Division II state champion-
ship game before falling to Ste-
phenville FAITH 58-32. The se-
nior-led team dominated dis-
trict opponents and fought off
injuries to advance to the state
championship game for the
first time since 2009.
Key Returnees: Darby
Plentl, Baine Smith, Colton
Richter, Joshua Jack, Christian
Hansell, Josiah Briggs, JT Ev-
erette
Key Losses: Willie Helm, JC
Charlton, Robert DeWitt, Jesus
Uribe, Nick Kosik
Reload, not rebuild: With
five senior leaders departing
from last year’s state semifi-
nalist team, some other coach-
es might be pressing the panic
button, but the Warriors’ Billy
Helm is high on the 2013 incar-
nation of his team.
Darby Plentl, Colton Rich-
ter, Joshua Jack and Christian
Hansell all have starting expe-
rience on the varsity level and
are more than capable of car-
rying the torch for Tribe.
Helm noted that the War-
riors played without at least
one of its senior starters for
nearly every game in 2012,
and younger players got valu-
able time on the field. He be-
lieves that if this team can stay

Keep an eye on these
District 17-4A players
that will excel in 2013.

Fall practice opens up on
Aug. 12 for all the teams in
District 17-4A. So to celebrate
the start of the season, The
Bastrop Advertiser is team-
ing up with our good friends
and Austin Community News-
paper-mates at the Pfuger-
ville Pflag to bring you a posi-
tion-by-position breakdown
of District 17-4A.
In the ever-evolving game
of high school football, per-
haps no position has changed
as much as the lineback-
er. Once a position occu-
pied by tough stalky players
charged with running down-
hill and plugging up gaps in
run defense, today’s line-
backer has to be able to cov-
er like a safety, while still pos-
sessing the trademark tough-
ness that comes with playing
the position. Last year, guys
like Paul Whitmill (Bastrop),
Darrell Songy (Connally) and
Michael Egwaugu (Connal-
ly) dominated the position,
earning headlines all over the
state. Though those guys have
moved on, there are always
players waiting in queue to
take the top spot.
Top of the hill: Jonathan
Johnson, Manor senior
Johnson was the only
non-senior linebacker to earn
a spot on the first-team all-dis-
trict list. He recorded 117 tack-
les and 12 for loss last year.
Johnson usually lines up at
the outside linebacker spot
in Manor’s 3-4 defense. He
