Bobcats Defeat Mission
n Regional Game 17-8
Refugio.—Performing like the.the Bobcats on the 19. “Bull”
champions they are, the Refu-
gio Bobcats registered a clean-
cut 17 to 8 victory over the Mis-
sion Eagles to win the regional
Class AAA football game at
Alice on Friday night, Decem-
ber 6.
The Bobcats received the op-
ening kickoff and marched 73
yards down the field to a score.
Gary Lott climaxed the 12-play
drive by going the final three
yards with 7.41 remaining to
play in the first quarter. Eu-
gene Lewis missed the kick for
extra point—first time in four
games and Refugio was ahead
6 to 0.
Mission got on the score board
with a safety in the first period.
The Eagles were unable to move
the ball and lofted a 44-yard
punt deep into Refugio territory,
Lott took the kick on the eight
and handed off to Lewis, who
got trapped behind the goal line
by Terry Langford.
Mission halted a Refugio
march deep in Eagle territory,
but Ronnie Green gobbled up a
fumble to regain possession for,
went the final six yards for the
score after he and Lott had each
carried once. On a double hand-
off, Lott tossed to Buddy Firova
in the end zone for a two-point
conversion.
Refugio miffed several scor-
ing opportunities in the second
half. Lewis booted a 21-yard
field goal with 4.15 remaining
in the third period and thus
completed their scoring for the
evening.
Mission scored in the fourth
quarter, climaxing a 93-yard
march with Don Brooks going
the final three yards. A pass
attempt for two points went for
naught as Ronnie Gipson inter-
cepted for Refugio.

grade basketball teams contin-
ued their winning ways in
games played in Sinton and Bee-
ville during the past week. Both

teams against Sinton on Thurs-
day, December 5, and against
Beeville on Monday, December
Schools to Close
Friday at Noon
Refugio.—All schools in the
Refugio Independent School Dis-
trict will close at noon on Fri-
day, December 13, according to
officials, to enable students to
attend the semi-final football
game that night.
Buses will make the usual
runs at the earlier hour to take
students home. The cafeteria
will not be open.
In the Eighth grade clash
with Sinton, Refugio downed the
Sinton lads by 35 to 17. High
scorers for Refugio were Philip
Brown with 18 points and Ricky
Lochamy with seven points.
Sinton’s high scorer was Schaef-
er with seven points.
The Seventh graders downed
the Sinton team by 31 to 7 the
same night. High scorer for the
local lads was Austin Butler
with eight points and Terry Bel-
lows with seven points. Spivey
lead the Sinton team with three
points.
Against Beeville, the Refugio
Eighth graders scored 40 points
to their 23. Leading the Refugio
scoring was Philip Brown with
13 points and Steve Sportsman
with ten points. Trevino lead
the Beeville scoring with nine
points.
In the Seventh grade contest,
Refugio downed Beeville by the
score of 40 to 26. Austin Butler

Bishop.
Mayo and Jimmy Miller of
Taft; John Chovanec of Sinton,
Poindexter, Chilcoat and Leland
DuBose, all of Gregory-Port-
land; Menard of Aransas Pass;
Elliott of Bishop and Gary Knox
of Refugio were named to the
all-ournament team.
Refugio fans were pleased by
the performance of the year’s
team in the tournament and
thrilled over the come-from-be-
hind win over Cuero.
With three Bobcats hitting in
the double figures the Refugio
club climbed steadily, then re-
fused to “go to pieces” as four
players went to the sidelines for
excessive fouling. Cuero lost two
of its players for fouling.
Refugio trailed by six points
at the end of the first period,
but had divided that margin
in half at the end of the second
period. When the final 8 min-
utes of play started, Refugio
was trailing by only one point.
Making good on eight of 12
free throws and limiting the
Gibblers to two field goals, Re-
fugio registered its first win of
the season.
