Jerome "Jerry" Jasek Sr.
Jerome Jasek Sr.
Jerome Arnold Jasek, best
known as, “Jerry Jasek Sr.” of
East Bernard, passed away
on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2013 at
Wharton Nursing and Reha-
bilitation Center in Wharton
at the age of 87.
He was born on May 18,
1925, along with his twin sis-
ter, Geraldine, in La Grange,
to Henry Emil Jasek and
Sophie Bertha Kurtzmann
Jasek. He was the fifth child
of 11 born to his parents. His
early family included all sis-
ters as his only brother, Hen-
ry Willie, passed away at the
age of 2 months on November
11,1937. He was known to his
sisters as “Sonny.”
His schooling took place
at the Rabbs Prairie Public
School, where he completed
the sixth grade. He enjoyed
keeping in contact with his
classmate, Edward Belicek, of
Blanchard, Okla., throughout
the years. His lack of a formal
education, however, did not
hamper his ability to achieve
master certification in me-
chanics for Hudson Products
and McDermott Engineering
from which he retired, and
later on as a master water
well driller and pump install-
er. Callers to the house would
most usually ask for “The
Well Man.” There really was
not an engine, machine, appli-
ance or well that he could not
diagnose and fix.
On Aug. 21, 1945 he was
united in marriage to Agnes
Marie Vanicek at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in High Hill
in Fayette County. Very soon
after, he was inducted into the
U.S. Army as a private first
class.
Upon his return began
his lifelong work of mechan-
ics, water well drilling and
his most favorite pastime of
plowing the field and grow-
ing crops of cantaloupe, wa-
termelon, corn, cucumbers,
green beans, potatoes and his
most requested crop — mus-
tard greens. His seed catalog
was never far from him. Sec-
ond to his farming was his
catfish pond, where throwing
food into it with his grandchil-
dren to watch the fish get into
a feeding frenzy, was a favor-
ite past time. He was happi-
est with his tractor, home-
made soup nearly every day,
Captain D’s Fish and helping
out anyone who needed some-
thing fixed, no matter the
time or day.
Survivors include his wife
of 67 years, Agnes Vanicek
Jasek, of East Bernard; chil-
dren, Leroy Jasek of East
Bernard, Linda Kopecky of
East Bernard, Margie Perales
and husband Joe of Rosen-
berg, Leonard Jasek of East
Bernard, Jerry Jasek Jr. and
wife Angel of Lissie, Mary
Andrew and husband Perry
of Rosenberg, Nancy Munoz
and husband Fred of East
Bernard and Jeff Jasek, an
EBEMS paramedic of East
Bernard; grandchildren, Sar-
ah Kopecky Venglar, Thomas
Kopecky, Joey Talas, Jason
Talas, Kristi Jasek Robles,
Lauralea Jasek, Shane Mu-
noz and Malori Munoz; nu-
merous great-grandchildren;
sisters, Bertha Jean Ruether
and Irene Michalsky, both of
La Grange, Gloria Barta of
Flatonia and Celestine Wi-
dacki of Houston.
He was preceded in death
by daughter, Betty Talas, for-
merly of East Bernard; sis-
ters, Geraldine Blum, his twin
formerly of California, Esther
Touchet and Levine Schmidt,
both formerly of Louisiana,
Ivy Dell Curry and Ange-
line Dowell, both formerly of
Houston; and infant brother,
Henry Willie formerly of La
Grange.
Per his wishes, funeral ar-
rangements will be kept sim-
ple and private. Interment
will be at Holy Cross Catholic
Cemetery in East Bernard.
Friends are welcome to visit
and express condolences to
his widow, Agnes Jasek, at her
home. Memorial donations
can be made to the American
Diabetes Association and The
Alzheimer’s Association.
