Mineola Memorial Library Notes
BY LIBRARIAN MARY HURLEY
Greetings to all. Fall has fi-
nally arrived! For those of you
who have endured the heat
with us, the air conditioner
has been repaired. Hooray!
The children's programs
have begun. After School is
exploring the moon. They
have made a moon and earth
and compared the interiors.
Clean up was rather tasty.
Preschool has met with sto-
ries and songs and coloring.
Citizenship has begun with
Jerrisue Hash. This is a class to
prepare for taking the citizen-
ship test. Class meets once a
week on Wednesday after-
noons from 4 to about 5:15
p.m.
ESL and GED classes will
begin Oct. 3 and 4 respective-
ly. ESL will meet on Thursday
evenings from 6 until 8 p.m.
in the Meredith Room of the
library. GED classes will be
on Friday mornings from 10
a.m. until noon. These classes
are available due to Gateways
to Libraries.
We are beginning a weeding
project in the adult non-fiction
and adult fiction. What is
weeding you ask? Weeding is
the removal of books that are
not circulating or are beyond
their shelf-life (worn-out).
What happens after a book is
weeded? It is removed from
the catalog, then it might be
listed on Amazon. If the item
cannot be listed on Amazon, it
either goes to the annex for the
book sale or to another resell
service. Is it hard to weed?
Yes, it is - nobody likes to get
rid of a book but sometimes it
has to be done.
Don't forget to join the
Friends of the Mineola Memo-
rial Library for their meeting
on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
They will have a short pro-
gram and business meeting. If
you would like to be involved
in helping the library, this
might be the place for you.
Remember we have e-books
available through Freading.
You can find Freading on the
card catalog page at mineo-
alibrary.com. The books can
be downloaded on i-pads and
tablets, nooks, and Kindle Fire.
This is a free service for our
patrons. You must have a cur-
rent, fine-free library card.
Memorials have been given
to the Mineola Memorial
Library in memory of Carol
Carlisle by Lou and Gene
Mallory, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick
Bogan, Mr. and Mrs. don cox,
and Allene Deuson.
Don't forget the library is a
501(c)(3) and your donations
are tax deductible.
We do accept books. If you
are going to bring in more
than one box, please, call
ahead so we can be prepared
to assist you. We do not take
encyclopedias or old maga-
zines.

of employers seeking health insurance coverage.

With open enrollment in the health coverage
plans under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) set
to begin on Oct. 1, a series of surveys from re-
spected organizations reinforce consumer con-
fusion that exists about health insurance and
the new law.
A September 2013 study in the Journal of
Health Economics suggests that most Ameri-
cans lack even a basic understanding of health
insurance. The study finds that only 14 percent
of those surveyed could define essential ele-
ments of a health insurance plan. In a second
survey, conducted by Gallup in June 2013, 43
percent of consumers surveyed were unaware
they must have health insurance coverage un-
der the new health law.
Mark Bellman, president of the Texas Associa-
tion of Health Underwriters, expressed concern
that many consumers will be making major de-
cisions that will affect their future and financial
viability without the insight needed to make in-
formed choices. "Health insurance is a complex
and sometimes overwhelming topic. Many will
face coverage options for the first time without
fully understanding and weighing the impact
of their decisions. If someone is not sure about
the best choice for themselves, their families
or businesses, they should seek the advice of a
professional."
An August 2013 Kaiser Family Foundation
study reported that 51 percent of consumers
say they do not have enough information about
the ACA to understand how it will impact them
and the proportion of people who feel they do
not have enough information remains particu-
larly high among Hispanics, the uninsured,
young adults and those with lower incomes.
The Kaiser Foundation poll also found that
a large percentage of the population remains
confused about the law's status, with 44 percent
either thinking the law has been repealed (8
percent), overturned by the Supreme Court (5
percent), or unsure whether it remains the law
or not (31 percent).
Highlighting the basic questions about the
new law, the Texas Association of Health Un-
derwriters has compiled five of the top ques-
tions being asked by consumers and employers.
"We hope this list will provide a starting point
for a conversation about the best type of cover-
age for families and employers," said Bellman.
Am I affected by the individual mandate for
health insurance coverage? Almost everyone is
affected by the individual mandate for health
insurance coverage, particularly if someone
does not currently have health insurance cov-
erage. If consumers can afford health insurance
and do not have coverage in 2014, they may
