Apply for disability benefits from the convenience of home
By Julie Hahn
Social Security District Manager
CORSICANA-Have
you been thinking about
applying for Social Secu-
rity disability benefits, but
you are unable to visit a
Social Security office to
complete the interview?
Or perhaps your dis-
abling condition makes it
difficult to visit a Social
Security office. We have
good news: you can com-
plete your application for
Social Security disability
benefits from the conve-
nience of your home. Get
started at
www.socialsecurity.gov/ dis-
ability.
The application process
involves determining:
1) whether you have
sufficient work to be eli-
gible for Social Security;
2) the severity of your
medical condition; and
3) your ability to work.
Because we carefully
review so many cases -
more than three million
each year - it can take us
three to five months to de-
termine whether you are
eligible to receive benefits.
The amount of time it
takes to make a decision
on your application can
vary depending on a num-
ber of factors, such as:
• the nature of your dis-
ability;
• how quickly we obtain
medical evidence from
you, your doctors, hospi-
tals, or other medical
sources; and
• whether we need to
send you for a medical ex-
amination to obtain evi-
dence to support your
claim.
We have several impor-
tant initiatives to speed up
the process. For example,
our Compassionate Al-
lowances initiative allows
us to fast-track certain
cases of individuals with
very severe disabilities.
Two hundred different
types of disabilities qualify
for this expedited decision,
and the list continues to
expand. Since Compas-
sionate Allowances began
in 2008, the agency has
fast-tracked more than
250,000 disability applica-
tions, getting benefits to
people in a matter of days
instead of months.
Learn more about Com-
passionate Allowances at
www. social security.gov/com-
passionate allowances.
Another way we speed
up decisions is with our
Quick Disability Determi-
nations initiative, which
uses technology to identify
applicants who have the
most severe disabilities and
allows us to expedite our
decisions on those cases.
Read more about Quick
Disability Determinations
at www.socialsecurity.gov/
disabilityresearch/qdd.htm.
There are things you can
do to help speed up the
decision process too.
The more information
you provide up front, the
less time it will take us to
obtain the evidence we
need - and the faster we
can make a decision on
your application.
The types of informati on
we need include:
• medical records or
documentation you have;
we can make copies of
your records and return
your originals;
• the names, addresses,
and phone numbers for
any doctors, hospitals,
medical facilities, treatment
centers, or providers that
may have information re-
lated to your disabling con-
dition;
• the names, addresses,
and phone numbers for
recent employers and the
dates you worked for each
employer; and
• your federal tax return
for the past year.

work due to a disability and
getting to an office is
ood Swap to be held in Fairfield
Special to the Tribune
FAIRFIELD-If fresh,
homemade food is your
passion-if local, sustain-
able food is important to
you - there is a club just
for you!
Everyone is invited to
the Freestone County
Food Swap at 11 a.m.
Saturday, July 27, at the
fairgrounds in Fairfield.
The event is being held
in conjunction with
Fairfield Market Days.
A food swap is a simple
event that allows people to
trade homemade, home-
grown, or foraged foods.
On the day of the event,
you will be asked to fill out
a “swap sheet” for each
kind of item you bring.
For example, if you
bring three jars of peach
salsa and a couple dozen
fresh eggs, two swap
sheets will be needed.
The form will ask you to
identify any common al-
lergens.
Tables will be available
for displaying your items.
If you like, samples may
also be set out so that oth-
ers can decide if they like
your homemade venison
jerky, or old-fashioned tea
cakes.
After a brief introduc-
tion, and an explanation of
the rules, everyone is in-
vited to see what items
have been brought.
If you see something
you’d like, write your
name on the swap sheet
along with what item you
are willing to trade.
Then, after everyone has
had a chance to look things
over, the host will an-
nounce for the actual
swapping to begin.

Check your sheet to see
who is interested in your
stuff, and begin your trans-
actions.
Perhaps you can trade
for the herb-infused vin-
egar you tasted earlier, or
you may get lucky and
snag that pan of sweet ta-
males.
Things may be a bit cha-
otic during swap time, but
that’s part of the fun.
Remember, food is a
very personal thing. Some
people have allergies, and
others may be on special
diets, so don’t take it per-
sonally if someone declines
your swap. Also, do not
feel like you have to accept
someone’s offer of gluten-
free brownies if you hate
chocolate.
A successful food swap
means coming home with
new items for your pantry,
and new connections to
fellow food enthusiasts.
Food swaps are oper-
ated as a private club.
While it is understood that
food items being traded
are not necessarily pre-
pared in commercial kitch-
ens or spaces inspected by
any government agency,
participants agree to use
the highest standards of
safety and cleanliness in
food preparation.
Come and meet fellow
foodies on July 27 and

freshly picked zucchini, or

(yes, they are edible).
Participants are also
welcome to bring food re-
lated items to the swap,
such as canning supplies,
cookware, seeds, etc.
And, of course, be pre-
pared to swap recipes (un-
less, of course, they are a
family secret).
The event is being held
the same day as Fairfield
Market Days at the historic
W.L. Moody Reunion in
Fairfield, Texas.
Look for us under Pa-
vilion 1 next to the Civic
Center (Green Bam).
The Food Swap will be
held from 11 a.m. to noon.
Be sure to arrive early, so
you have time to set up your
wares.

July 27, Aug. 24, Sept. 28
