Tenny’s Tales_
Grandkids arrive and enjoy the Kerens scene
By Tenny Whorton
Contributing Writer
KERENS-Well,it hap-
pened again. My
grandkids from the city ar-
rived at “Pa’s” house and
had a rousing good time.
Yep, they thought it was
great to get outside and see
Sie horses and cattle roam-
ing just a short distance
away from my front door.
They made a break for
it shortly after arriving. I
finally found them standing
next to a barbed wire
fence feeding grass and
apples to the horses on the
other side.
When Pa asked them if
they needed any help
rounding up the “hosses,”
they quickly said “Naw”
and kept petting the horses
which had come up to the
fence line.
These are my two
grandkids who lived in
Hawaii just a few years
back. When they were
visiting Kerens and people
asked how they liked Ha-
waii, they replied that it’s
fine, but they liked coming
to Pa’s house more!
Man, talking about mak-
ing those of us from Big K
take notice, we did! I
mean, are we living in
Paradise or what?
In the past, they have
also enjoyed picking cot-
ton when it was at full blos-
som. They even took it to
school with them and were
asked to explain exactly
what cotton is and how
you raise it! The teachers
apparently enjoyed the
presentations as well as
their classmates! Yep,
there is a lot to be thankful
for when you live in a
country setting, as we do.
High tech help
The grandkids are 11
and 12, and Pa is always
happy to see them arrive
in our neck of the woods.
They know Pa is in need
of help when it comes to
working his new “smart”
phone and other electronic
gadgets in the house.
Man, talk about realiz-
ing how far ahead the
younger generation is -
this will do it. They keep
me right on track with
calls, e-mails and mes-
sages, for as long as they
are visiting me, at least.
I remember one session
when my 12-year-old
grandson was working one
of his games on his iPad.
Pa asked to play the game
with him. It was one that
featured flying fighter
planes and they were hav-
ing dog fights. Pa thought
he could hold his own at
this and he convinced the
grandson they could play
that one together.
Well, it wasn’t long be-
fore Pa was shot down
about six times. By then,
or maybe before then, the
grandson was ready to
play other games of inter-
est. He told Pa to take a
seat and he would see him
later.
Very soon he was play-
ing a game that really
looked interesting, so Pa
asked if he could play that
one with him, too. The
grandson looked over at
Pa, frowned, shook his
head and said, “Pa, you
couldn’t do this one! ” And
you know, I think he was
right!
My, my, what our kids
and grandkids can teach us!
So that’s it for now. I
just can’t wait until the kids
show up again. I need all
the help I can get!
See you in later editions
of The Kerens Tribune. I
would love to hear the sto-
ries about your grandkids
and the great lessons we
can learn from them!

CORSICANA-You’ve
probably noticed the unusu-
ally cold and stormy weather
we’vebeen experiencing this
year. That makes it more
appropriate than ever to rec-
ognize National Umbrella
Month this March.
National Umbrella
Month is a time to cel-
ebrate a useful invention
used by most everyone.
It’s no coincidence that the
month comes at the begin-
ning of the rainy season.
April showers may bring
May flowers, but the rain
starts pouring in March.
When the rain pours, an
umbrella has you covered.
If you work and pay
Social Security taxes, we
have you covered too.
Whether the storm that
hits you unexpectedly is a
disability, the loss of a
loved one, or an unex-
pected early retirement
(such things can sneak up

on you like a sudden
storm), Social Security’s
umbrella of coverage will
keep you protected from
the harsh weather.
You qualify for Social
Security benefits by earn-
ing credits when you work
in a job or are self-em-
ployed and pay Social Se-
curity payroll taxes. In
2014, you receive one
credit for each $1,200 of
earnings, up to the maxi-
mum of four credits per
year. Most people need
10 years of work (40
credits) to be eligible for
retirement benefits.
The number of credits
you need for disability ben-
efits depends on how old
you are when you become
disabled. For example, if
your disability occurs be-
fore age 24, you generally
need 11/2 years of work
(six credits) in the three
years before you became
disabled. At age 31 or
older, you generally need
at least 20 credits in the 10
years immediately before
you became disabled.
In most cases, you need
to have worked about 10
years for surviving family
members to qualify for sur-
vivors benefits. Survivors
of very young workers
may be eligible if the de-
ceased worker was em-
ployed for 11/2 years dur-
ing the three years before
his or her death.
Umbrellas have been
around for thousands of
years. Social Security has
only been around since
1935. Yet the Social Se-
curity umbrella covers an
expanded range of ser-
vices for you and your
family. When you need to
leam more about disabil-
ity, survivors or retirement,
the place to go is
www.socialsecurity.gov. And
you don’t even have to
grab your umbrella on your
way to apply—just do it
online from the dry com-
fort of your own home or
office computer.
