PART FIRST.
DON ANGEL NAVARRO, the father of the subject
of this memoir, was a native of the Island of Corsica,
in the Mediterranean Sea, who, at an early age, entered the
Spanish army, and after serving many years in Europe,
when, on his regiment being ordered to Mexico, and stationed
in San Antonio de Bexar, a province of Texas, tired
with military pursuits; he resigned his commission and
married a Creole lady, a descendant of a noble family of
Old Castile. DON AN GEL, the Corsican, (for so he was generally
called by the simple and ignorant population of
San Antonio, on account of his birth,) had seven children,
the fruit of his marriage with DoihA JOSEFA RuizY Y PEilA,
four of whom were sons, the third being he with whose history
we are more particularly interested, DoN Jose ANTONIO
NAVARRO. At the time we write of, the policy of the Spanish
Government was to withhold education as much as possible
from the reach of the masses, only the sons of officials
in the employment of the King of Spain having facilities
