AUSTIN—One month be-
fore his scheduled inaugura-
tion, Gov.-elect Mark White
mobilized dollars to pay off
his campaign debt and politi-
cal support to keep a key
campaign promise.
Last week White held
fundraising dinners in Hous-
ton, Austin, Midland and
Dallas, collecting about $1.3
million to pay off the re-
mainder of his campaign
debts. The gala affairs put
him in the black just hours
before the deadline barring
politicians from accepting
contributions 30 days before
the Legislature convenes.
He also nixed a proposal
to end the automatic fuel
adjustment charge, saying it
did not go far enough, and
drew support from the Texas
Municipal League.
White reiterated his cam-
paign promise to abolish the
clause, vowing to appoint
utility commissioners who
will have a strict accounting
of utility companies.
"They (utility companies)
can play all the games they
want to today. When I get in
there, the party's over. And
they don't have to turn out
the lights,” White said.
