Bethel Baptist Church
to present special
Christmas program
Citizens of Big Lake
and Reagan County will
receive a very special
blessing during this
Christmas season from
the members of the
Bethel Baptist Church.
Two fine Christmas
treats are in store for
the community. The
first is in the form of a
Christmas program pre-
sented by the children
of the church. On Sun-
day night, December
16th, at 7:30 p.m., the
children will present
this special Christmas
program. This program
is directed by Mrs. Ter-
ry Suggs. Following the
program, there will be
refreshments and fel-
lowship for everyone.
Then on the nights of
December 17, 18, 19,
and 20th, a real live
Nativity Scene will be
reenacted on the comer
of Ohio and 12th
Streets. Members will
be portraying the char-
acters of that first
Christmas Night. Live
animals will be used for
the enjoyment of the
younger children in the
community. Members
will present 'Carols
from glorious days of
old' to add a special
personal touch to the
scene.
This project is under
the direction of Dor-
wood Ragland with the
assistance of his com-
mittees.
Rev. H. G. Barnard,
pastor of the church,
would like to extend a
special invitation for
everyone to come out
and visit and enjoy the
inspirational music and
fellowship in this season
of 'Peace on Earth and
Goodwill to Men.'
Miss Loftin attends historical meeting
First Methodists schedules
Special Christmas programs
Services at the First
United Methodist
Church during the Sea-
son of Advent include a
Christmas family night
supper and Christmas
tree Sunday evening,
December 16. The sup-
per will begin at 6:30
p.m., and the Christmas
tree and program will
follow.
Then on Sunday even-
ing. December 23, the
Candlelighting Service
will be at 7:00 p.m. This
year's Candlelighting
Service is 'Love and
Light to All the World*
prepared by Jean F.
Craig.
Loreet Loftin attend-
ed the quarterly meet-
ing of the Upton County
Historical Society in
Rankin, Sunday, De-
cember 11 in the Rankin
Museum.
Miss Loftin was im-
pressed with the re-
ports read at the meet-
ing concerning the
group's latest project
that of preserving un-
marked and unprotected
graves in the counties
country wayside. Sev-
eral graves of historical

importance have been
researched and listed
for preservation. The
preservation consisted
of construction of metal
fencing around each
grave and the installa-
tion of permanent iden-
tification markers.
These graves are listed
in the museums ceme-
tery index along with
the regular cemetery
census.
In listing graves
found in the area, it was
mentioned that similar
graves were to be found
in adjoining counties
including Reagan Coun-
ty. In emphasizing the
importance of locating
early grave sites the
Texas Historical Com-
mission contends Wes-
tern Texas with its arid
climate should contain
better preserved lo-
cations. Many of these
are to be found along
the tedious trails taken
by early travelers fol-
lowing the routes to the
California gold rush and
the routes of old Long-
horn cattle drives after
the Civil War.
Later during the
Indian depredations,
sites might be located
along the old Butterfield
Stage Coach lines. Miss
Loftin stated she and
several others in the Big
Lake area knew of un-
known grave sites.
