Tenny’s ales
Turn out the lights the party’s over
By Tenny Whorton
Contributing Writer
KERENS-One of the
most frequent questions
most of us are asked when
we say “Hello” and start
talking with someone is:
“So how are you today?”
That’s just a fact of life. It
is how most of us start gab-
bing with friends, neighbors
and even people we have
never met before.
Each of us has a stock-
pile of unusual replies:
“Wonderful”, “Awesome,”
“Never Been Better,”
“Good,” “Popping On All
Cylinders,” “Blessed” and
“Fine.” And on and on.
Each one of us could
make a lengthy list of how
we usually answer that
question.
But some replies can get
you in hot water - particu-
larly with your old friends.
One of my repeated an-
swers has always been,
“Well, I am pretty good!”
And that has always served
me well. At least it had until
I ran into a very old friend
at one of our Kerens get-
togethers not too long ago.
This buddy saw me from
down the sidewalk and hur-
ried over to meet and greet.
“Tenny, it has been so long
since I last saw you... how
are you?” Just as enthusi-
astically, I shot back,
“Pretty good, and what
about yourself?”
Well, my answer
stopped him in his tracks.
He scowled, looked at me
real serious like and re-
plied, “Now, wait a
minute. I have known you
too long. I know you aren’t
good! And you sure aren’t
purty!”
Aww man, I nearly
passed out. It took a long
time before I could stop
shaking my head and
laughing. But he caught me
dead to rights.
Well, my buddy always
did have a way with words.
I just wish he hadn’t used
those particular ones with
a lot of our friends listening
in.
But since that wake-up
call, I have had fun telling
folks that I meet, that I have
to be careful in answering
their questions.
Then I tell them what my
buddy said. The person I
am telling this to usually
laughs heartily and gets a
kick out of it.
Several have told me
they are going to pass that
one on just as soon as they
can. A couple of them even
told me they would quote
me on the subject the next
time they talk to their friends
and will pay me a royalty
for using it if I insist.
I tell them, no, I am just
re-quoting an old buddy
and I am surely not paying
that guy royalty money!
My, my what old friends
can continue to teach you.
Warm weather is here
At last the cold weather
seems to have left us for
good and we are starting to
enjoy a Texas-style spring.
Just this past week, I
read on my car thermostat,
an 80-degree reading! And
I am now leaving the house
with only a T-shirt on. I am
still not down to the t-shirt
mode but that shouldn’t be
too far away now.
But some of my buddies
who have been complain-
ing so much about the cold
nights and days are now
complaining about - the hot
weather!
Yeah, they say they are
sweating from sun-up to
sundown and when will it
ever cool off? No kidding,
that is happening.
But I promise you; I am
going to sweat a whole lot
more before I join that song.
Let’s enjoy our beautiful
spring while we can.
