A 58-year old woman was seriously in-
jured after the pickup she was driving
rammed into the back of a Kountze school
bus after it had unloaded some students on
Wednesday, Oct. 3.
According to the Texas Department of
Public Safety, Sharon West of Kountze was
driving a 1996 Dodge Ram pickup travel-
ing in the southbound lanes of Texas 326
near Laird Road outside of Kountze at a
high rate of speed. The driver allegedly
passed three vehicles on the shoulder of the
highway while they were stopped behind
the school bus.
According to the report, the pickup side-
swiped a 2002 Honda Accord, a 2007 Toy-
ota Corolla and a 2007 Dodge pickup before
swerving back into the main lane and strik-
ing the bus as it began to pull away at
around 3:45 p.m.
Eleven students from Kountze ISD were
on the bus at the time of the accident.
West was airlifted to Christus St. Eliza-
beth Hospital in Beaumont, where she was
listed as critical. She was later listed in sta-
ble condition on Thursday.
Four students and the driver of the bus,
were transported by Acadian Ambulance to
Baptist Hospital in Beaumont with minor
injuries. The driver of the Accord was also
transported with minor injuries.
The drivers and passengers of the other
vehicles involved in the accident were not
injured.
DPS in Hardin County charged West with
failure to control speed in the crash. An in-
vestigation continues as to whether a med-
ical condition played a factor in the cause
of the accident.
The bus remained in the southbound lane
after impact with its red flashing warning
lights and its stop sign engaged.
Time for Prayer
In mansions of glory and
endless delight,
I’ll ever adore thee and dwell
in thy sight;
I’ll sing with the glittering
crown on my brow:
If ever I love thee, my Jesus,
’tis now.

Kountze
cheerleaders get
2-week wait before
judgement
By Andrea Whitney

Judge Steve Thomas granted the Kountze
cheerleaders a 14-day extension to the previ-
ously issued temporary restraining order. The
extension will allow the cheerleaders to con-
tinue to use the faith based signs that have
been the center of controversy for the past sev-
eral weeks for at least 14 days.
The extension will allow Judge Thomas
more time to review ah points each side made
and also to review case law to ensure that he
makes the best decision for ah parties in-
volved.
Trouble began last month when a citizen
complained about several members of the
Kountze varsity and middle school cheerlead-
ing squads displaying faith based banners with
biblical scriptures on them at football games.
Since then, the small town of Kountze has
become the epicenter of this controversy.
While the cheerleaders and parents never
thought it could ever come this far, they have
found themselves in a court of law to attempt
their beliefs and the right to continue display-
ing the signs.
Upon the beginning of the meeting, school
board president, Wayland Whisenhant called
the board into a closed session, along with at-
torneys from both sides.
After approximately two hours and several
attempts at trying to iron out an arrangement
that both parties could bear, attorneys for both
clients came out of closed session and pre-
pared for battle.
