of Texas Honor Days. The
John Floyd Gilbert Chapter in
Livingston honorsTexas Statehood
Day on Feb. 19.
In the American presidential
election of 1844, James K. Polk
was strongly in favor of the
annexation of Texas. Polk was
elected and in February, 1845,
both houses of Congress passed
a joint resolution for annexation.
Texas would become a state in the
Union as soon as its people gave
their approval and adopted a state
constitution.
Most Texans were happy with
the terms of the joint resolution.
Texas would keep her valuable
public lands and pay her own
debts.
In 1850, Texas surrendered
about one-third of Texas’ public
lands'td the ‘United States. With
the proceeds, Texas paid off
her debts. On July 4, 1845, a
convention in Austin was held and
the annexation was approved by
an overwhelming majority. The
convention then spent two months
drafting a state constitution. The
annexation and constitution were
JAMES K. POLK
approved by the voters of Texas in
October, 1945. The Congress of the
United States approved the Texas
Constitution of 1845 in December
and President Polk signed the act
on Dec. 29, 1845. The final step
to make Texas a state occurred in
Feb. 1846.
Anson Jones, the last president
of the Republic of Texas, gave a
farewell address. He closed his
speech saying “The final act in this
great day is now performed. The
Republic of Texas is no more.”
With the lowering of the Texas
Star Hag and raising the Stars
and Stripes, Texas became the
28th state in the United States of
America.
The John Floyd Gilbert Chapter
of the Daughters of the Republic
