Prairie Days planned Saturday
By NATALIE BEDNORZ
news@journal-spectator.com
EL CAMPO — El Campo’s Fourth An-
nual Prairie Days Festival is three days
away and still adding activities to this
year’s line up.
The fun kicks off at 10 a.m. at Alamo
Park in downtown El Campo Saturday.
The festival features all day entertain-
ment until midnight.
“We have a few unconfirmed activities
still in the works,” El Campo Chamber
of Commerce President Rebecca Munos
said last Thursday.
“I am glad to say that we have also
added several new things this year,” Mu-
nos added.
For older kids, the event will have
a rock climbing wall, bungee run and
hamster water balls. A Ferris Wheel and
other rides are on the way to the park,
she added.
‘We were so excited that we could get
the hamster water balls,” Munos said.
“You get inside the plastic ball and you
can run or walk on water without getting
wet.”
For younger children, the petting zoo,
train ride and face painting will be avail-
able in the area behind the post office.
Plenty of carnival-style games will be
available.
Live entertainment will begin at 11
a.m. with various bands and different
music throughout the day.
Food and craft vendors are returning
this year too, Munos said.
We can still accept craft vendors,” she
said. “But we are maxed out in space for
food vendors.
‘We have people coming from all over
to visit Prairie Days and that just shows
that the event is growing in popularity,”
Munos added.
Besides entertainment, Prairie Days
also gives residents the opportunity to
support local clubs and organizations,
Munos added.
The El Campo Museum of Natural
History will host its annual Run Wild on
the Prairie 5K run/walk event beginning
at 8:30 a.m. Children will race through
city neighborhoods with all proceeds ben-
efiting the museum.
‘We have many children come out and
participate,” Director Cheri McGuirk
said. Walk or run, both parents and
their children will have a good time.”
Those wanting to participate can sign
up before the event, she added.
“They can sign up until 8:15 a.m.,” Mc-
Guirk said. “Everyone gets a T-shirt and
all children receive a small prize from the
museum.”
The 3G Texas Tailgate Cook-off will
return this year. The event benefits the
El Campo Medical Foundation.
“It’s a really laid back competition,”
event coordinator Kelly Janik said. ‘We
have competition categories ranging
from chicken noodle soup to one-pot-won-
ders. There is no actual barbecue.”
The cook-off is still looking for teams,
she added. Registration begins at 7:30
a.m. and judging takes place between
noon and 2 p.m.
“The event only takes up half of your
day, so you still have plenty of time to
enjoy the festivities and entertainment,”
Janik said. “Space is limited, so please
turn in your entry forms as soon as pos-
sible.”
Registration forms are available at
the Chamber office, 707 Farenthold, or
by calling 543-2713.
We are still accepting volunteers,”
Munos said. “If anyone needs informa-
tion about Prairie Days events, please
feel free to call or stop by.”
