Traveling with the Texas angler
By Keith Warren
This week I logged over 800
miles on the Dodge to fish three of
Texas finest black bass lakes.
Starting out at Lake Amistad on
Monday, we caught bass just about
everywhere we stopped. Concen-
trating between markers 20 and 23
on the American side, fish were
plentiful. We caught bass up to four
pounds on a variety of lures.
Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, topwaters
and worms.
Early in the morning and right
before dark they were hitting
topwater (a twin prop Snooker) in
the back of smal 1 pockets. Just about
every one we went to held a fish. As
the sun got up, the fish seemed to get
off topwater and over from the back
of these pockets towards deeper
water.
Throwing spinnerbaits (1/2
ounce white Strike King double
willow leaf) parallel with the
shoreline was extremely produc-
tive, but only in areas where there
was wind. When the water was
calm, I changed to a Rattletrap (3/4
ounce Baby Bass) and caught the
most fish; however, these fish were
all non-keepers.
During the heat of the day (which
was up to 88 degrees), I located bass
in grassy fiats that included brush.
The flats had to have deep water
close by and brush had to be mini-
mal. If you found brush in 6 to 8
feet just barely sticking out of the

water with grass around it and deep
water nearby, there was a good
chance of a bite on a worm. I found
a 4" smoke Ringworm worked best.
Totals for Amistad that day were
55 bass, 12 of which were 14” or
better. The top five fish would have
weighed about 15 pounds.
After leaving Amistad, 1 headed
home, recharged the batteries in my
boat, then left for Lake Austin
Wednesday morning. I arrived at
the Highway 360 boat ramp at 7:00
a.m. It was much cooler than just 2
days before on Lake Amistad. I ran
up river about 5 miles to a spot that
had always produced fish for me. It
was a grass hump that ran paral lei to
the river bank for about 100 yards.
After realizing that the hydrilla was
almost gone from the hump (and not
getting a bite), I figured the water
had cooled enough to start thinning
the grass down and I needed to start
hunting new water.
Lake Austin is a river lake which
runs from the Travis Lake Dam
(Mansfield Dam) approximately 22
miles south through Austin to
Towne Lake. The water is as clear as
Amistad, maybe a little clearer due
to the rock river banks and abundant
hydrilla found from one end to the
other. This gorgeous hill country
lake is a haven for water skiers and
boaters. Located near the Univer-
sity of Texas, you'll see lots of col-

lege kids running up and down the
lake creating lots of wave action.
Most serious bass fishermen avoid
Lake Austin because of the boat
traffic, but I promise it's as good a
bass lake as any in Texas.
I kept checking water for about
an hour, just running and hitting a
spot with five or six casts and
moving on. Finally I found some
off-colored water in sloughs about a
mile from the dam. Thisoff-colored
water had lots of shad and lots of
bass. I threw Rattletraps and large
spinnerbaits and caught quite a few
fish. Including one 4-1/2 pounder
on a Rattletrap. But these fish were
only in off-colored water and there
wasn't very much of it. So I needed
to locate something else.
There wasn't a cloud in the sky
and the wind was starting to blow,
creating a good ripple on the sur-
face. I went looking to find the
windiest bank I could that had a
quick drop off the shallow to deep
water.
I changed my spinnerbait to a 1/
4 ounce Strike King double willow
leaf with a c lear and smoke shirt and
no trailer. This small bait produces
best in clear water when fishing is a
little slow. My preference is to work
a spinnerbait extremely fast this
time of year. A fast moving lure, in
clear water will get vicious strikes.
Finding the windiest bank possible,
I started ripping the spinnerbait
through the water, just under the
surface. It didn't take long and the
action started. Total catch for the
day was 25 fish, only 6 keepers, the
largest five would weigh around 14
pounds.
After working in my New
Braunfels office the next morning
taking care of some paperwork, I
decided to head south to Choke
Canyon, located just west of Three
Rivers. It was around 2:00 p.m.
when I met with old friend Elroy
Krueger. Krueger has guided on
Choke Canyon since it opened in
1986 and is known nationwide for
his ability to find bass. It had been
about 8 months since I was at
Choke, and it is a new lake now. By
that I'm talking about the sudden
appearance of grass everywhere.
Any serious bass fisherman knows
that aquatic vegetation means good
bass fishing.
Elroy loaded his gear in my boat
and headed to the south shore flats
area of the lake. The shoreline was
covered with submerged weed
beds. Krueger explained that the
bass were holding in the areas where
the grass had reached the surface.
The depth was about three feet or
less. "You want to fish the little
barren spots in the grass, that's
where you'll get bit,” said Krueger.
As predicted, we found the
shallow water bass aggressive and
easy to catch. Occasionally the fish
would miss the spinnerbait. But you
could throw right back and he'd bite
again. We were using the strike
King .38 Special (chartreuse) and a
Hawg frog trailer. "When the fish
are that active they're easy to catch
and they are on a feed," said
Krueger. We caught and released
more than 30 bass in two hours, 22
keepers to 7 pounds. The five largest
bass would weigh close to 25
pounds. To contact Elroy Krueger,
call 512-7864775.
Over the last month, my phone
has been ringing daily with reports
of great fishing all over the State. As
I've said before fall is a magical time
of year. Fish seem to turn on ev-
erywhere due to the cooler weather.

in The British Journal of Nutrition
found that the ingredient, a natural
plant colloid, can cause significant
weight loss. Several explanations for
the weight loss are suggested, but the
most likely according to scientists in
a Furnish study, is that colloids seem
to decrease the intestinal absorption
of calories. However, universal ac-
ceptance of this theory will depend
on further study.
National Dietary Research, an or-
ganization committed to the research
and development of nutritional solu-
tions to world-wide health problems,
has successfully isolated and incor-
porated a series of colloids into a
unique food tablet called Food Source
One.. A significant breakthrough in
nutritional weight control. Food
Source One provides a scientifically
designed method for weight loss.
When used as directed, Food Source
One replaces high calorie fats with
lower caloric nutrients, thereby pro-
viding optimum nutrition with a
minumum number of fat calories.
According to a study in the American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition, you do
not need to restrict the amount of
food you eat to lose weight, just the
fat.
Food Source One is unlike any
other product on the market and is
available immediately because it is
not a drug and only contains natural
ingredients already known to be safe.
Physicians and pharmacists are prais-
ing Food Source One as a natural,
drug free alternative for confronting
obesity.
